Retrofitting is affordable, doable and exciting! Check out our video of a 1980s house retrofit, where we chat with the owner/project manager who transformed her old brick home into her own personal mansion, now a stunning and modern looking home.

We are committed to decarbonisation.

The urgency of addressing emissions from buildings is clear; greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from this sector make up roughly a fifth of total global emissions. Despite the rapidly diminishing global carbon budget and need for all sectors to decarbonise, buildings sector emissions have remained stubb...

SPECIAL REPORT: The built environment has developed a taste for sustainable, low emissions steel — but in Australia, the cupboards are relatively bare, By Poppy Johnston
Ecotect Architects recently completed a retro-fit project called the Old Fremantle House. Although the original stone house is from the 1890s, the modern additions sit very comfortably with the old, and enhance the liveability of the home within the local lifestyle.

Ecotect’s mission is to see buildings become part of the solution for the 21st Century. The carbon cost of new buildings means that adapting the buildings we have is a great shortcut. This is especially true for brick buildings, because with the right treatment its possible to create a stable interior temperature without having large energy bills.
The value of using an architect to revitalise a building can be hard to measure, but the University of Melbourne has managed to do it. They found that the increased capital appreciation of a property where an architect has been involved rather than a builder is a whopping 1.2% extra in the capital growth per year. This translates to a return of $11 for every $1 spent on architects fees.
That’s a good start, but its not enough. Ecotect want to help our clients on a journey beyond just capital appreciation. We want to also make the building a proud contributor to a viable planet.

Lovingly called the Old Fremantle House, this home now feels light and fresh (especially the new modern walk-through dressing room). The indoor/outdoor room features an aluminium solar pergola and Everbright cover and the addition of retractable blinds provides extra shade and shelter while maintaining views of the feature random-stone wall and leafy garden. The wrought iron and limestone front wall have attracted comments from many approving neighbours and are the result of diligent research by the client and excellent workmanship. Although the original stone house is from the 1890s, the modern additions sit very comfortably with the old, and enhance the liveability of the home within the local lifestyle. The Clapin project is progressing well on site, and the builder is now working on the interiors of the main house and granny flat prior to completing the front and rear landscaping.🤩
A little update on our Fremantle renovation project! Although most of the building work was completed months ago some final details like the wrought iron on the front fence and gates took extra time. Now all the elements are in place. The home feels light and fresh, especially the new modern walk-through dressing room with beautifully chosen tiles and subtle lighting.
