Thinking the biggest battery will get you the biggest government discount? It’s not quite that simple.

Under the current Cheaper Home Batteries Program settings, eligible battery capacity is now supported at different rates.

From 1 May 2026, iStore explains the STC weighting as:

0–14kWh → 100%
Over 14–28kWh → 60%
Over 28–50kWh → 15%

And only the first 50kWh of usable battery capacity can be considered for battery STCs.

So rather than choosing your battery based on the rebate alone, start with what your home actually needs.

How much solar are you generating?
When are you using electricity?
Do you want backup?
Could an EV or other electric appliances change your energy needs later?

Then have an accredited professional design the appropriate system around your home.

Eligible systems may receive a discount of around 30%, but the final amount depends on the system, installation date, location, certificate value and complete program eligibility.

Get the right battery first. Then understand the discount available to you.

Ever wondered what’s actually happening inside a heat pump? 👀

It works very differently from a conventional electric hot water system.

An iStore heat pump captures renewable heat energy from the air around it, then uses the heat-pump cycle to transfer that energy into the water stored in the tank.

That means electricity helps run the system, but it isn’t relied on as the primary source of heat.

The result? iStore states up to 70% lower hot-water energy use compared with conventional electric storage water heating.
