When I make cutting boards from Marri I do my best to hand select solid pieces of Marri and avoid using the very gummy, fall apart in your hand pieces of Marri for obvious reasons. In this Marri edge block board the colour and grain patterns that has come through has just blown 🧂🦆 away!!! 😱😱. Curly grain, spalted grain, light pink marri through to washed grey colours … it has it all….. no such thing as a boring piece of Marri!! 👍👍🧂🦆

Made alot of colourful saw dust today!!! Machined up 10 different species for this mixed timber edge grain butchers block. Just love the colour and grain transition across the block … only a WIP but couldn’t resist showing it off already !!!!👍👍🧂🦆

First major project for 🧂🦆 that I started in the new workshop and was finished in the new workshop. Took a lot longer than I hoped as I was fumbling my way around with the work flow still and not being optimally set up yet. Being a solid timber project it was good to get a genuine feel for the layout of the shop and I have walked away with a ‘to do list’ of ideas I had whilst building this project 😂😂😂. This kitchen trolley is made from solid Western Australia Blackbutt and has Blum soft soft close under mount drawer runners, 6 bottle wine rack and the top surface is a single Blackbutt slab top. It’s 900mm x 600m x 900(h) in size 👍👍🧂🦆

Had the pleasure of completing another special board this week. This Marri board is a farewell gift for a retiring geologist. Cast in the resin is the geologists Loupe (glass lens) along with some high grade nickel core samples from Mauritania! So a very privileged 🧂🦆 to be hand such special items to be turned into that special piece. 👍👍🧂🦆

For those that love a fiery red colour palette!! This lovely piece of Jarrah with fiddleback feature grain has been brought to life with a special 🧂🦆 mix of colours…. And people say to me Jarrah is too dark and too dated …one of my fav Timbers … especially when combined with a striking resin 👍👍🧂🦆

Sometimes you just find that piece of timber that puts a massive grin on your face as you know exactly what you going to do with and can envisage the finished piece before you start … that was 🧂🦆 roughly 3 weeks ago 😁😁😁…. And still grinning! Stunning piece of ‘fall apart’ Marri with vibrant Violet resin. 👍👍🧂🦆

Every now and then 🧂🦆 comes across some very special and unique project commissions and this piece is certainly one of them!!! This Jarrah board with a striking Aquamarine blue resin river which represents the ‘Queens Colour’ of the Royal Australian Air Force, was commissioned to hold the clients sword and sword scabbard and allow room for a plaque to be added along the bottom. The holders were drawn in sketch up, transferred to v carve pro and cut out on the CNC… and took a few tweaks here and there to get it perfect but once again I was very happy with how this special piece has turned out! The Jarrah even has a bit of feature curl through the grain as well which was a little bonus!!

Started in the old workshop and finished in the new! This 2.4m Marri Dining table with a Jet Black resin river has been a WIP for sometime whilst I was in the process of moving 🧂🦆 but the finished piece was worth the wait. Stunning Marri with some cracking featured ‘Flame grain’ at the branch union is simply breathtaking. Love the colour through the Marri which is a perfect match for the contrasting Jet Black Resin River! One of 🧂🦆 favs!

Well here I am …. Almost 4 months to the day of submitting my application to lease this premise, I am all set to recommence 🧂🦆 production on Monday morning🤩🤩🤩🤩. It’s been an absolute exhausting effort in getting 🧂🦆 packed, shipped and re established in a 2 week window… (technically I’ve been working on this for the last 6 months) but I couldn’t and didn’t do this as a lone 🦆… i had a support crew that were simply amazing, gave me everything and are an important part of 🧂🦆. I know there is still work to be done and will be able to tweak and improve things as I go along but it’s pretty good. Still have my showroom to set up and some exciting things to fill it with 🤔🤔and plenty of timber to sort through as well but that can all be done over time. I have also had some unbelievable support from my amazing customers who have been patiently waiting for there pieces … I hope the wait is now not that long as 🧂🦆 gets cranking again! … and most importantly the water popping man will return!! 👍👍🧂🦆

Some more stunning Western Australia Jarrah tables rolling through the 🧂🦆workshop this week! These two tables are the product of a clients 110mm slab 😱😱 coming into the 🧂🦆 workshop which was subsequently re milled to perfection by Derek , allowing two magnificent tables to be created. Both ended up around 42mm mark after further levelling … and still damn solid! The original slab was well burnt in a fire creating some extremely dark and gnarly natural edges along with some stunning colours! Just love working on these single slab tables with all of the character telling its own story! 👍👍🧂🦆

Without doubt one of the most challenging table builds for 🧂🦆…. And the end result was worth every ounce of effort. Even though this piece represents a single slab Jarrah table, the build was more like a resin table, requiring around 15lts of resin, walls to dam the resin and countless top up fills to restore the integrity of this monster 50mm slab which spans 2.4m x 1.1m. Perched on solid custom ‘x’ legs this natural edged Jarrah slab table is stylish and modern yet traditional in colour, true to that of of this very popular Western Australia timber. Is certainly one of 🧂🦆 favourite tables 👍👍🧂🦆

When the underside of the table is just as good the top .. show it first I say! This picture of the underside is 🧂🦆‘s favourite picture of this stunning Marri and turquoise river table recently completed in the workshop. I think it’s the vibrancy on the turquoise against the geometry of the ‘z’ legs that makes the picture of the underside such a cracker! …. Very grandeur!.The Marri has some stunning cathedral grain running through the slabs and similar to a previous table, has a dusting of feature birds eye through the grain as well!! Couldn’t relocate it if 🧂🦆tried!! 👍👍🧂🦆

Today is a very special and exciting day for Damo and 🧂🦆 and represents many things and I wanted to share this one with you all. Today I picked up the keys to this awesome factory unit that I will be calling home for the next 5 years! In a couple of weeks’ time it would have been 2 years since I left the corporate day job to pursue a makers life fulltime and build a small business called SaltyDuck Woodworking. It has been filled with highs and lows and the journey is far from over, and I don’t even think I am a quarter of the way up the mountain yet!! There have been many, many times I thought it would be easier to wind SD back to a small hobby business and get a day job…but…. 🧂🦆 is where my passion is, is what gets me out of bed in the morning and is what I want to do, creating forever pieces for amazing customers. Moving the business into this factory creates many opportunities for 🧂🦆 to grow but also be an enabler to be a sustainable one 🦆shop in the future. Everybody knows moving shop is a complete %$#@*[email protected] and you won’t have any arguments from this 🦆there. Will be looking to move in October and taking you on the journey from seeing this empty shell convert to the new 🧂🦆HQ. Quietly isolating between excitement and absolute 🤯🤯🤯 but looking forward to the challenge the next few months will be! Stay tuned!! 👍👍🧂🦆

Delivered this week by 🧂🦆 was this cracking Marri dining table with a custom 🧂🦆 blue resin river 🤩🤩🤩. Not your typical Marri full of gnarly gum vein and massive cracks… these Marri slabs however offer just as much character with some stunning grain patterns, feature birds eye patches and even some fiddleback feature running through the slabs. Presented on the traditional 🧂🦆solid timber base this table has come together exceptionally well! Very pleased with this one! 👍👍🧂🦆

One of the many things I enjoy about what I do is the variability in colour that I get to see across both the Timbers and resins I use. This piece was meant to be all about the resin colour … a custom🧂🦆 colour blending 3 colours together in an attempt to meet a brief from customer wanting a specific look but when the piece was finished up I realised that this piece was actually all about that beautiful Marri timber … that stark contrast in colour from the greys of the natural edge through to the almost pale wheat tones of the heart wood just captivated you and holds your attention … cracking! 👍👍🧂🦆

Sometimes it is the smaller projects that are just as meaningful and expressive to that someone special as the larger projects. This little project by 🧂🦆certainly echoes those sentiments. Made from one solid block of 🧂🦆‘S favourite timber, this beautiful Sheoak box was created with some CNC and 🧂🦆 magic. Had kept this block of Sheoak aside for many many …. Many years as it was a nice solid block and was destined for a special project and that day had come. Filled the box with some shavings off the hand plan of various colourful species for a nice lining … yes i do own a hand plane and kinda can use it😂😂😂…. Enough to make some shavings anyway! 👍👍🧂🦆

Nothing like seeing beautiful Western Australia Jarrah pop! Alongside the vibrant Granny Smith green resin this Jarrah piece simply shines 🤩🤩🤩. The highlight of the piece for 🧂🦆 is the captivating fiddleback grain running through the Jarrah 😍😍… unique and simply stunning!!! 👍👍🧂🦆

I absolutely love using translucent colours in 🧂🦆 pieces and this Translucent mulberry colour is a one of my Favs! Absolutely stunning colour against this very feature packed Marri. Some amazing gum vein voids that create deeper and darker shades of the mulberry resin in this spectacular and unique piece! 👍👍🧂🦆

The 🧂🦆special blend of a couple of blues and a hint of some green’y blue 🤫🤔🤫… with Marri of course never fails to produce a piece that gives you that beautiful ocean colouring. I always try to keep curvy Marri bits aside specially for this colour as that helps create that beach look and a perfect partner for such a tranquil and peaceful colour!! Have just poured a table this colour so stay tuned to see how that piece turns out! 🤞🤞🤞. 👍👍🧂🦆

Have come across some beautiful Jarrah that has striking natural edges and a stunning colour palette and just wanted to take advantage of these features and get a few pieces completed to show just how good this Jarrah is! Poured this piece with Moonlight Jade Shimmer and no doubt the vibrant Moonlight Jade is responsible for enhancing the tones of the Jarrah in this board creating an amazing piece! 👍👍🧂🦆

In my humble 🧂🦆 opinion nothing makes more of a statement than a single slab of Marri perched on some elegantly designed and fabricated metal ‘Z’ legs. What a conversation it would be around the table!! …. Discussing the beautiful cathedral grain and highlighting the characteristic large Marri cracks and feature voids! Was absolutely stoked with this piece. Stunning and elegant in every element! 🤩🤩🤩

It has been awhile since one of these mixed timber end grain boards have rolled out of the 🧂🦆 factory!! I had this board about 50% complete and then was parked under the workbench for reasons beyond my understanding 😂😂😂… and this week I decided to get it finished and into a new home!! This end grain block is made up of some of the finest West Aussie hardwoods…. Jarrah, Karri and Wandoo… the ensemble making a vibrant statement of colour with those stunning characteristic grain patterns. Was nice to get this one finished up this week!! 👍👍🧂🦆

For the lovers of blue! 💙💙💙. This beauty has just rolled out of the 🧂🦆 factory and into its new home! This Marri table was 1.8m x 1m and has some stunning features and was completed with natural edges. Marri natural edges can be quite tricky to finish as they are very soft and can be full of gum vein… although a bit challenging and frustrating 🤯… I also like the ability to be able to shape the edges and get rid of the soft stuff and highlight the intriguing gnarly bits and pieces that you come across on these natural edges. This blue is Caribbean Blue Shimmer from and is stunning set with the beautiful wheat tones of the Marri. The ensemble is complete with those striking ‘z’ legs expertly crafted by .oz_fab for 🧂🦆.
