A roundup for this week . .

Probably summed up as two opposite features - compost and a 'dry bed'.

The first is obvious for preparing container beds for produce (and Dahlias, of course🏵️🌸🌼😊) being also the garden of Kelmscott Dahlias - Perth WA

That is of course part of the flower, edible, tropical and fruiting areas.

I regret that have to leave some lawn as my landlord wants that to stay, and it does provide my Ted somewhere to stroll!

The second, completely non edible productive, is part of the very dry verge under the enormous tree at the front - all the dry loving plants are there just as a feature.

I think that is better than neighbouring street fronts that range from neatly trimmed lawns to overgrown grass, shrubs and trees!

'Plentie', weather it's edibles or flowers, starts with the soil you have, then how you nurture it, feed it and create a haven for all the healthy organisms that will inhabit it!🌱🏵️🌸🌼🧑‍🌾

Kelmscott Dahlias - Perth WA

At first glance, a permaculture garden can look like any other garden. There are vegetables growing, fruit trees producing, bees buzzing and plenty happening beneath the soil.

The difference is how everything works together.

Traditional gardening often focuses on growing and caring for individual plants. Permaculture looks at the whole garden as a living system and asks how each part can support another.

Think of it as creating a little ecosystem in your own backyard.

Rainwater can be captured and reused. Fallen leaves become mulch. Kitchen scraps become compost. Flowers attract pollinators and beneficial insects. Different plants can be grown together to support each other, while healthy soil becomes the foundation for everything above it.

Nothing needs to happen overnight either. Permaculture can begin with something as simple as composting food scraps, improving tired soil, planting a few herbs amongst the vegetables or choosing plants suited to the local environment.

Here in Perth, where sandy soils and hot, dry summers bring their own challenges, working with nature rather than constantly fighting against it can make a lot of sense.

Could your garden already be using a few permaculture principles without you even realising it?

If you are unsure what your soil needs, bring in a sample, and we can do a free pH test and show you how to get your soil working for you.

Baking, brewing, cooking highlight from Monday/Tuesday😋

My daily loaf (made twice a week) was another variation of my basic sourdough/yeast enhanced - the sweetening was Maple Syrup, and flour included a good proportion of Spelt, (no egg yolk this time) - a lovely soft sandwich loaf! Airfryer baked!

At the same time I made a batch of Pizza dough with high proportion "00" flour - a great crust, prebaked in my airfryer for topping today!

Ginger Wine now in a 4.5/5lt fermenter - bubbling along!

Banana Wine strained (waste not wasted, in the compost!) that is fermenting nicely.

Ginger Beer/Tumeric Beer - from a 'Bug' or Plant as my Mum would say; bottled and topped up with raw sugar, water and spices - grated fresh ginger/tumeric to add.

Kombucha - a batch of Green Leaf Tea, fresh lemon/preserved lemon and a little fresh ginger. Enjoying the earlier brewed Red Fruit/Rooibos Tea!

Cooking - a lamb shank/lentil curry with fresh curry leaves, plus a spiced aubergine/potato curry with banana!

Video of wine brewing in comment!
