Pleased to have been part of the design team for the recently opened playground at the Crangan Bay subdivision. This fantastic new community space features walking tracks, a kick-around area, and a range of active and passive play elements for people of all ages to enjoy. Great to see this project now open and being enjoyed by the community.

Today, Terras celebrates 10 years of consecutive service for Director, Kate Hopoi.

Although Kate has been with Terras for close to 15 years since permanently relocating from New Zealand with her family, she has been instrumental in building a landscape architecture legacy here in Newcastle. Every day, Kate brings boundless positivity, hard work, and dedication to her role. Her professionalism, versatility, and expertise within the industry have contributed to her success in landscape architecture and earned her the respect of colleagues, clients, and consultants alike. She continues to thrive in her role as Director, leading by example and inspiring those around her.

Kate has been involved in many significant projects locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally, including:

-Local Centre Upgrades with the City of Newcastle, including Carrington, Stockton, and the recently completed Orchardtown Road and Myra Street project in New Lambton.

-Recently completed Watagan Park Town Centre

-Huntlee District Park + Playground

-Karuah Public School an award-winning project recognised with the AILA NSW 2025 Award of Excellence for Health and Education Landscape (tag), and a Highly Commended recognition in the Schools Category of the Narragunnawali Reconciliation in Education Awards 2025.

-Vatu Talei Resort, Fiji - currently under construction.

Kate's dedication to the advancement of landscape architecture extends beyond Terras through her role as a NSW Chapter Executive for Australian Institute of Landscape Architects. Additionally, her commitment as the Terras Reconciliation Action Plan Champion has contributed to the successful endorsement of Terras' Reflect RAP by Reconciliation Australia and the ongoing development of its Innovate RAP. Through this work, Kate is helping to promote reconciliation and foster relationships, respect and trust between the broader Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Terras is incredibly fortunate to have such a warm, positive, and inspiring person on the team. We congratulate Kate on this milestone and thank her for her many years of dedication at Terras.

St Nicholas Fletcher.
Major upgrade or an older facility with five fully refurbished childcare spaces for this facility at Fletcher.

Each space has been designed to enhance the way children explore and learn through play-based experiences, ensuring that the learning environments speak to childrens’ sense of belonging and support their early developmental skills.

The refreshed spaces provide:

- Gross motor play zones with bike tracks and equipment to support strength, balance, and coordination.

- Natural play elements such as timber, sandstone, and sensory materials to encourage connection with the environment.

- A gardening space where the children can grow their own produce.

- Quiet reflection spaces for storytelling and restful moments.

This week, Terras proudly celebrated the deep, unceded connection of Indigenous peoples to Country and the enduring cultural connections that NAIDOC Week honours and embraces so well.

We began the week by attending the Civic Park NAIDOC Week Flag Raising Ceremony, where we were moved by the large gathering of local community members who came together in celebration and respect, even on a cold and rainy day. The event highlighted the long-standing and continuing relationship that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have with Country, particularly through this year’s theme ‘50 Years Deadly’.

Terras employees also embraced the spirit of the week by bringing in a variety of native ingredient-inspired snacks for this Friday’s morning tea. From wattleseed sausage rolls to lemon myrtle cake, Australian native ingredients were the stars of this week’s cake day.

While NAIDOC Week celebrates the strength, resilience and rich cultural heritage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, Terras remains committed to continuing its journey of reconciliation through learning, collaboration, and meaningful action. This commitment is reflected in our ongoing Reconciliation Australia-endorsed Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) and our future development of an Innovate RAP.

Terras is proud to be working with the Port Macquarie Ocean Pool Committee on the design development of this long-anticipated project, following initial concepts by Nicole Larkin. With years of community advocacy since 1970, the vision of an ocean pool at Oxley Beach is a crucial step toward enhancing the local coastline.

Building on the success of our Newcastle Ocean Baths renovation and the Bogey Hole restoration, Terras’ proposed design addresses key site constrains to support the projects future development and advocacy efforts.
