This 10-metre structural steel pipe tie was numbered wrong and was 45mm short for that bay.

The incorrect tie had to be removed and replaced with a correctly fabricated member. We guided the replacement pipe into position, lined up both ends and secured it to the structure.

A 45 mm mistake does not sound like much—until the steel is 10 metres long and already on-site.

All structural modifications and replacement work should follow the approved drawings, engineering requirements, lift plan and site procedures.

This SHS connection was sitting at the wrong angle and was also off-centre, so it was never going to line up properly with the beam connection above.

Instead of forcing the connection, I cut the whole thing off, cleaned the SHS back, reset the correct position and angle, then welded it back on so everything lined up properly.

Sometimes the cleanest fix is to start again.

This galvanized round column was fabricated 50mm too long, so it had to be shortened before it could be installed.

First, I cut the base plate off the column. Then I measured and marked exactly 50mm around the pipe before removing the excess material.

After that, I prepared the weld by removing the galvanizing, cleaning the steel and getting everything ready for welding. Once the base plate was positioned back on the column, it was welded back into place.

Sometimes a small measurement makes a huge difference on-site.

✔️ Tap it into position
