This project was all about creating a low-maintenance, Mediterranean-inspired arrival while holding onto the elements the client already loved.

We repositioned the existing agaves to create a small screen outside the front window, while the cherry tree was turned into a feature, framed with a corten steel ring and contrasting light stone against the warm Tuscan screenings.

At the front, we also retained the two established Port W**e Magnolias, which the client was keen to keep. Already budding, they’ll soon bring a beautiful pop of colour from the street.

We also refreshed the garden beds and fence line with Pyrus ‘Capital’ pears, a rosemary understory and low-maintenance grasses

A simple, considered palette designed to give the home a warm and welcoming arrival.

Mount Martha Retaining Wall 🧱🔨

A challenging little access job, but a massive improvement to this side passage.

With no machinery access whatsoever, the entire job had to be completed by hand — excavation, digging post holes, positioning the steel, moving the concrete sleepers and installing drainage. 💪

One of the biggest considerations on this project was the existing brick boundary piers, which had developed a noticeable lean toward the property. With the new retaining wall running directly alongside them, safety was a major concern throughout construction. The wall alignment, excavation and installation sequence all had to be carefully considered to avoid disturbing the existing piers or placing unnecessary pressure on them. ⚠️🧱

The new wall was constructed using galvanised steel posts set in 40MPa concrete, with concrete sleepers installed between. Behind the wall, we incorporated 100mm agricultural drainage, scoria and geofabric to manage water and reduce hydrostatic pressure behind the sleepers. 💧

Working in such a narrow space made every stage more labour intensive, but the finished wall has completely cleaned up the area and provided a much stronger, safer and longer-lasting retaining solution.

The finished result showcases a crisp, polished look, featuring a carefully curated mix of hardy Australian natives layered throughout the garden to complement the feature Arbutus unedo (Strawberry Tree) 🌳. The garden beds are styled with structural planting, rich mulch and volcanic rock borders to enhance zoning.

Site preparation is one of the most critical stages of any landscaping project 🚜. Getting the groundwork right from the start helps keep the project on schedule and creates the ideal foundation for healthy, long-lasting turf. We also installed a smart irrigation system to keep our clients lawn pristine all year round 🤩.

The excavation work shown here is a key part of that process, ensuring the site is properly prepared before the next stages begin. With the groundwork in place, the new lawn has the best possible conditions to establish and thrive 🌱.

A seeded lawn once properly tended to can have an amazing effect while the native shrubs have come into their own and shaped up nicely for an aesthetic and useable space.
