Cardboard Architecture With the launch of Fold Theory, Tobias Horrocks’ architecture and furniture design skills are brought together in a single practice.

What happens when you fold architecture with furniture? The range of design scales brings exciting potential for cross-pollination and experiment. Although run solely by Tobias Horrocks, the practice is structured to allow for collaboration with other design experts. Fold Theory’s sustainable design practice encompasses bespoke cardboard design, temporary installation design, recyclable furniture and interiors, flat-packed trade show stands and sculptural artworks.

The Chinese Arch installation for the Ballarat Heritage Festival has now come down, and I just wanted to say thank you - especially to the local Chinese community, whose generosity and enthusiasm meant a great deal.

The work began with historical research into the 1901 Chinese Arch, including a photograph showing the original structure - a timber scaffold wrapped in translucent fabric, glowing with light from behind. That image stayed with me.
What followed was months of design, engineering, fabrication, problem-solving, impossible deadlines, and an enormous collaborative effort from many people who gave their time, skill and care to help bring it into existence.

Over 7,000 people walked beneath the arch during the festival weekend.

CACHE Curating, historian David Waldron, the wider exhibition team and all the fabricators, installers and collaborators who helped make the project possible. Alongside the arch, Fold Theory also designed and fabricated the exhibition walls and plinths throughout the space.

More documentation to come once I’ve recovered a little and gathered everything together properly - but for now, thank you.
