Today is National Sorry Day, a day of mourning and reflection to remember the Stolen Generations - the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who were taken from their families, removed from their communities, stripped of their languages and taken off Countries under forced removal policies.

We also acknowledge the communities that have fought for generations to keep children safe, strong and connected.

🌿 PLANT OF THE WEEK 🌿
Tasmanian Pepper, also known as Mountain Pepper

This week the spotlight is on the Tasmanian Pepper tree, recently planted by Whittlesea Mayor Lawrie Cox and Lalor Tennis Club President Liz Laspatzis during the inauguration of the new Bush Tucker Garden at Lalor Tennis Club. A meaningful addition to the space and a powerful native plant with deep cultural and culinary value.

This lush tree has been used for thousands of years by First Nations communities not only as a food source, but also for its medicinal properties. Today, it continues to be a favourite in bush tucker kitchens across the country.

🍃 Kitchen Tip:
The dried berries can be used as a native alternative to black pepper, while the leaves add a beautiful spicy flavour when infused in oils, sauces or slow-cooked dishes. A little goes a long way!

This week, Australia celebrates all the incredible people who generously share their time, skills and passion by volunteering for causes they believe in.

And we absolutely LOVE volunteers ... and volunteering! 🥰

Both of us have a long history of volunteering with different organisations and community projects, and we are still actively involved in several volunteer roles today.

This year, we were fortunate to connect with Volunteer West, who invited us to be part of the work opportunities they offer through their volunteer program.

Since then, we have had the privilege of working alongside an incredible team of volunteers, learning from each other, sharing knowledge, and creating meaningful impact together.

💫 Volunteers are at the heart of strong, connected communities, and this week we want to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who gives their energy, care and time to support others and Country.

As most of you know by now, we live for Indigenous plants and bush tucker. We strongly believe in the power of native ingredients and incorporating them into everyday cooking.

So when we experience things like this Davidson plum cocktail pictured, it tingles our senses and gets our neurons firing! 🍸

Hats off to this Spanish tapas restaurant in Moonee Ponds , which among its menu included ingredients like pepperberries, wattleseed, finger lime, saltbush, lemon myrtle, strawberry gum and Warrigal greens. 🌿

Not only did it add a surprising burst to the food and cocktails, it got the table talking and learning about bush tucker, many of who had never heard of the ingredients, let alone tried them.

Imagine if more restaurants decided to include bush tucker among their menus!
