SOL:id

SOL:id SOL:id is a speaker series co-ordinated by RMIT design students.

We come from each of the design faculties taught at RMIT: industrial design, architecture, interior design and communications. Intelligent and relevant design breaches the boundaries imposed by the designer’s specific qualification:

A speaker series designed by students from various disciplines in collaboration at RMIT will address 21st century approaches to this fundamental insight. Despite the

fact that design promises integrated solutions to complex problems, it often does not deliver on these promises - hence the field is increasingly left aside when it comes to issues of substance. This speaker series is designed to investigate the reasons for this critical situation and the ways to overcome this. Such a series will encourage a design trajectory that is much more flexible and
resilient to increasing economic and social pressures. We need to forge successful bridge builders:

Through the staging of exemplary scenarios of cross-collaboration between designers, the public and private sector, SOL:id aims to create a platform not only for widened design approaches but equally
addresses and invites representatives from public and private sectors to contribute to this dialogue. This might surface the core problems for design in the 21st century as we feel that we’re just starting
to scratch the surface.

THIS IS JUST A REMINDER THAT THE NEW PRE-BALLOTING EVENT IS TAKING PLACE TOMORROW NIGHT FROM 6PM IN 8.11.68

Students from Semester 2 2013 will present their work from the upper pool studios in an open forum. All are welcome to attend.

The event forms part of the suite of information provided on the design studio series in the Master of Architecture program, along with the posters and balloting presentations.

It is an opportunity to see what actually takes place in different tutors design studios and therefore help you decide which studio to preference in the ballot. Remember, the preferences you select are final and you cannot switch studios so it is vital that you select four studios that you would like to do.

WHEN: Friday 21 February 6pm

WHERE: RMIT Building 8 Level 11 Lecture Theatre (8.11.68)

ALL NEW AND CONTINUING MASTERS STUDENTS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND.

Thanks to everyone who attended / participated / provocated at one of our SOL:id sessions! We're sad to close out the Q&A's for the year but still plenty of ways to engage with new ideas - lookout for a couple more streamline tutorials coming soon. Also one of our speakers Ammon Beyerle from Speculative Ideas is running an event "Eurisko" coming up shortly.

Eurisko Melbourne - is about 'discovering by doing'. It's an event with a market-place of show and tell tables, sales and displays, classrooms for workshop demonstrations and presentations, and areas to build things, show things, perform things and play.

They'd like to invite you to contribute by bringing your project(s) to show and tell over a weekend. This event is officially part of Melbourne Knowledge Week, and this is a community event for learning and sharing to change how knowledge works in our world. http://euriskomelbourne.com/what-can-you-contribute

We are so excited to hear Tim Longhurst speak tomorrow as well as our other guests, possibly the first futurist to speak to a design audience at RMIT! http://www.timlonghurst.com/about/

Constantly moving talks. This made things interesting and easy-going. Great opportunity for lively, interesting discussion. Made me think about things in a different light.
