To glass or not to glass? 🚿 That is the question…

Open showers and wet rooms are definitely having a moment. They can look incredible, make a bathroom feel more open and remove some of the visual barriers created by a traditional shower enclosure.

But does that mean everyone should ditch the shower screen?

Not necessarily.

When we're designing a bathroom, there are a few practical questions we consider before deciding how much glass — if any — is right for the space:

💦 How big is the shower area?
A standard 900 x 900 shower without adequate screening can send water well beyond where you want it. The larger the shower zone, the easier it is to create an open design without soaking the rest of the bathroom.

🥶 How warm is your bathroom?
If your bathroom feels positively Arctic in winter, an open shower may not be your friend! A more enclosed shower helps contain steam and warmth and reduces those chilly drafts while you're showering.

🧽 How enthusiastic are you about cleaning?
This one matters more than people realise. In a true wet room, more of the bathroom is regularly exposed to water. Ideally, excess water should be squeegeed or dried after use to reduce water marks and help minimise mould and mildew — and remember, that's potentially every grout line in the wet area, not just the ones inside a shower enclosure.

📐 And how is the room actually going to be used?
Bathroom size, shower position, ventilation, heating, drainage and even who uses the room can all influence the best solution.

These five Plumbstruct bathrooms show just how different the answer can be. From fully screened to partially screened and beautifully open designs, each was created around the room and the people using it.

We love a good bathroom trend — but good design has to work long after the trend has passed. ❤️

So… to glass or not to glass? Which would you choose? 👇

Your bathroom might be trying to tell you something… 👀

If the bottom of your architraves are starting to swell, soften or peel like this, don’t just reach for the paintbrush.

Timber doesn’t generally do this for no reason. It’s a sign that moisture is getting somewhere it shouldn’t be. 💧

The cause could be anything from water regularly escaping the shower area to a failed seal, leak or another waterproofing issue. Simply sanding and repainting the timber might make it look better temporarily, but it won’t fix whatever is causing the moisture.

This is exactly the sort of little warning sign that is worth investigating before a small problem becomes a much bigger repair.

So next time you’re cleaning the bathroom, have a quick look around the bottom of your door frames and architraves.

Your house often gives you clues. You just need to know what to look for. 🔍🏠

“Hi, can you tell me why my water isn’t draining properly?” 🤔💧

Hmmm… we may have found the problem.

That pipe is supposed to have water running through it. Not be packed solid with mud. 😂

Sometimes drainage problems require a bit of detective work to find the cause. Other times you uncover the pipe and the answer is staring you right in the face.

Safe to say, no amount of drain cleaner was going to sort this one out! 🪠

If your drains are slow, backing up or just not behaving as they should, it’s worth finding out why rather than simply treating the symptom.

Who says bathroom tiles have to play it safe? 💗

Tiles are one of the easiest ways to inject some personality into a bathroom, and this one certainly isn’t short on character!

Rather than using the feature tile in one small section, we carried this gorgeous pink and white marble tile in a herringbone pattern through the shower and around the vanity, letting it become a real design feature of the room.

Paired with simple white finishes and clean glass, it makes a statement without every element having to compete for attention.

Your bathroom is part of your home. Have a little fun with it and choose something that makes you smile every time you walk in. 🛁✨

Cheapest quote wins! What could possibly go wrong? 😂

We have absolutely nothing against getting multiple quotes. In fact, we think you should.

But make sure you're comparing more than the number at the bottom of the page.

Licences, insurance, experience, quality of workmanship and actually knowing how to build the thing all have a little bit of value too. 😉

Because fixing this afterwards probably wasn't included in the cheap quote. 🧱😂

🏡 Throwback to our Lulworth project.

This beautiful Victorian home was ready for a kitchen update, but the goal was never to lose the character that made the original home special.

We love the contrast here. A clean, contemporary kitchen with an abundance of bench space, storage and light, sitting beautifully alongside the original exposed brick and that gorgeous stained glass window. 🤍

The modern cabinetry, stone and polished concrete give the space a fresh new feel, while those original features make sure it still feels completely at home in a Victorian house.

For us, a great renovation isn't always about replacing the old with the new. It's about knowing what to change, what to keep, and how to make the two work together.

We reckon Lulworth is a pretty beautiful example of getting that balance just right. 👌

🎉 Happy Birthday to the woman who keeps Plumbstruct running behind the scenes – Lara! ❤️

While Shane might be the face you see most often on site, there’s a whole lot happening in the background to keep the wheels turning… and Lara is usually right in the middle of it.

Accounts, systems, marketing, planning, problem solving, keeping Shane vaguely on track 😂, supporting the team and generally making sure all the things that need to happen actually happen.

She’s also Mum, wife, chief organiser, occasional site hand, reluctant painter when Shane ropes her in, and the person most likely to remind everyone that there is, in fact, a plan. 🤣

Running a family business can be chaotic, exhausting and incredibly rewarding, and Plumbstruct simply wouldn’t be what it is without her.

So today we’re putting down the spreadsheets, ignoring the emails and celebrating Lara! 🥂🎂

Happy Birthday from all of us at Plumbstruct Industries. We hope you’re thoroughly spoilt today. ❤️

Plumbing is one of the oldest trades in the world… because, let’s face it, humans have ALWAYS needed to p**p. 💩😂

The job might be as old as civilisation, but thankfully the tools have come a long way!

This collection of old plumbing tools gives a pretty fascinating glimpse into how plumbers got the job done generations ago. Some of them are still surprisingly recognisable, while others make us very grateful for the modern version sitting in Shane’s toolbox. 🛠️

The tools may change, the technology may improve, but the basic job remains the same…

Keep the water coming in, and make sure the other stuff goes out. 🚿🚽😂
