More beautiful old construction equipment from a recent trip through New Zealand.

I believe this equipment formed part of the fleet used during construction of the Upper Waitaki Power Scheme. It’s incredible to see these old workhorses still standing.

Does anyone know the history of this equipment or have any stories from the project? I’d love to learn more about where these machines worked and what became of them. If you have any information or old photos, please share them in the comments!

Using a dozer for pushing scrub is way better when you use three dozers for pushing scrub…

🚜 A little piece of earthmoving history…

We recently stumbled across this old scraper setup and it definitely got us talking.

Does anyone know where this is? Even better, does anyone know the history behind this old scraper—who owned it, what project it worked on, or how it ended up here?

We’d love to hear any stories, photos, or bits of local knowledge. Sometimes these old machines have some incredible history behind them, and it’d be great to help preserve it.

Drop what you know in the comments and share this around so we can find the people who worked on and on longside this gear! 👇

In business, partnerships are vital for getting results. Brenden and Charlie at Ember Safe Earthmoving Pty Ltd demonstrate this perfectly, as seen in the results of this job that we recently completed together. Awesome work guys 👌

Another angle of our dozers progressively backfilling the central core.

The previous video generated plenty of discussion about the methodology, so this view provides a little more context.

The material being placed is selected low-permeability clay, moisture-conditioned close to its Optimum Moisture Content (OMC). It is placed in controlled lifts and compacted using padfoot rollers to achieve a minimum of 98% Maximum Dry Density (MDD).

As each lift is placed, the dozers progressively widen the core and key the clay into the prepared sidewalls. This ensures the core remains fully bonded to the surrounding formation, creating a continuous impervious barrier through the dam wall.

It is a progressive process—placement, moisture control, compaction, testing and widening—repeated lift by lift.

Judging by the comments, Facebook is home to some of the most experienced machine operators in the world.

We’d like to encourage these professionals to keep sharing their advice, so our operators can continue learning how to do their jobs properly.

Every day is a school day — particularly in the comments section. 😂

Once the topsoil has been stripped and removed, preparation of the dam wall foundation begins.

Excavators and dozers progressively turn over, deep rip and blend the exposed soils to break down inconsistencies and achieve a uniform, workable foundation. Moisture and material condition are carefully managed throughout the process to ensure the foundation is suitable to support the compacted dam embankment.

The prepared area is then proof rolled with a padfoot roller to validate the foundation and identify any soft, unstable or inconsistent sections. Any areas requiring additional work are ripped, blended, moisture-conditioned and compacted again before being rechecked.

This process continues until the entire foundation is confirmed suitable—because the long-term performance of a dam wall depends on the quality of the ground beneath it.
