Restoring a character home is one of the most rewarding things I do - and one of the most misunderstood. Swipe through.

There's a version of heritage renovation that strips everything back to bare walls and replaces it with something generic. I'm not interested in that.

The homes I love working on have something worth saving - original joinery, period windows, 12-foot ceilings, verandahs that actually work with the Gippsland climate. My job is to figure out how to make them perform for modern life without losing what makes them special.

It's not always easy. Many of Gippsland's older homes were designed for a different era - and sometimes a completely different climate. Getting the energy efficiency right, the orientation, the connection between old and new... that takes experience and a genuine interest in the problem.

When this family came to us, they'd been living in the home long enough to know exactly what wasn't working. Cold. Damp. Drafty. And a property full of views and sunlight that the existing layout just couldn't capture.

The brief was clear - make the extension feel like it always belonged. Gabled roofs, wraparound verandas, details that pay homage to the original, while finally making the home work for life on a functioning farm.

There's something I wish more people knew before they replaced their kitchen.

I've walked into so many homes where a beautiful brand new kitchen is sitting in exactly the wrong spot - because no one stopped to think about what might come next.

Old homes often have kitchens tucked into corners, or in spots that would make the perfect family room or outdoor entertaining connection. Installing a new kitchen there can close the door on your dream layout before you've even had the conversation.

Kitchens, bathrooms, and laundries are the most expensive rooms in any home. Getting the placement right matters.
