HOW OLD ARE YOUR SMOKE ALARMS?

This week's Friday smoke alarm check is one that is easy to overlook.

You know when you bought the house.

You might even know when you moved in.

But do you know how old your smoke alarms are? 🤔

🔥 Here's your check this week:

📅 Find the date on each smoke alarm.

⏳ Are any of them approaching or over 10 years old?

🔍 Check the manufacturer's instructions for the recommended replacement age.

🚨 Don't assume that because a smoke alarm still makes a noise when you press the test button, it's still performing as it should.

Smoke alarms don't last forever. Sensors can become less reliable as the alarm ages, which is why manufacturers specify a service life and recommend replacement when that period is reached.

And remember — replacing an old alarm isn't just about putting up a new alarm.

The replacement needs to be the right type, correctly positioned and, where required, interconnected with the other alarms in your home.

With 1 January 2027 getting closer, now is a good time to find out exactly what you've got installed.

IF ONE GOES OFF… DO THEY ALL GO OFF?

This week's Friday smoke alarm check is all about INTERCONNECTION. 🔗

A smoke alarm is important.

But interconnected smoke alarms can give you an even better chance of hearing an alarm when you're somewhere else in the house.

🔥 Here's your check this week:

🔗 Are your smoke alarms interconnected?

🧪 Have you actually tested the interconnection recently?

🚨 If you press the test button on one alarm, do the other alarms sound too?

📡 If you have wireless interconnected alarms, are they still communicating correctly?

If there's a fire in one part of the house, you don't want to find out that the smoke alarm in another part of the house can't hear it.

Queensland's smoke alarm requirements include interconnected smoke alarms, and from 1 January 2027 the legislation will be fully in effect for owner-occupied homes.

So don't just press the test button and assume everything is working.

Test the alarm.

Test the interconnection.

Make sure the whole system is actually doing what it's supposed to do.
