Taco Tuesday tomorrow! 🌮
It’s got me planning summer tacos straight from the garden: sweetcorn 🌽, chillies 🌶️, tomatoes 🍅, capsicum 🫑, zucchini 🥒 and limes 🍋‍🟩, with broad beans 🫘 standing in for Mexican beans. Add wraps and a handful of coriander 🌿, and we’re ready.

Well, almost. Nothing ready to pick yet! 😂

Plant now. Tacos in summer. 🌱🌮

🌱 Setting Up a Veggie Patch – Tip 3: What do I feed my crops?

You’ve got your veggie beds set up, now you need to keep the soil and plants fed.

These are the 3 ways I feed my veggie patch:

🌿 Compost – improves the soil and adds nutrients.
🐔 Blood & bone + pelletised manure – slow-release nutrients for steady growth. I add these about every 6–8 weeks.
💧 Liquid fertiliser + potash – a quicker feed during active growth. I liquid feed every 1–2 weeks, with potash when plants start flowering and fruiting.

You don’t need lots of fancy products. Good soil, compost and a simple feeding routine can go a long way.

🐰 And hopefully it means plenty more veggies for Coco and Pepper to taste-test!

🐰 What’s one of the easiest snacks you can grow for your rabbits?

Kale! 🌱

I grew this kale from seedlings in my front garden and around 2 months later, it’s ready to harvest for Coco and Pepper.

You can grow it from seed or seedlings, and the best part is you can pick the outer leaves and let the plant keep growing.

Cheap, easy and rabbit approved. 🐰💚

How many garden beds do you really need? 🌱

You can start with just one, but I’ve set up four to make crop rotation easier:

1️⃣ Cucurbits
Pumpkin, cucumber, zucchini and watermelon

2️⃣ Roots and alliums
Carrots, beetroot, radishes, leeks and spring onions

3️⃣ Solanaceae and legumes
Tomatoes, capsicums, eggplants, chillies, peas and beans

4️⃣ Brassicas
Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and Brussels sprouts

When it’s time to replant, each group moves into the next bed. Rotating crops helps prevent the same plants from repeatedly taking nutrients from one area and may reduce recurring pest and disease problems.

You don’t need four beds to start growing, but they do make crop rotation easier to organise.

A friend asked me how to set up a veggie patch, so I’m turning her questions into a beginner-friendly series 🌱

First question: How much sun do crops need?

☀️ Most fruiting crops need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight
🧭 In Melbourne, most of our sunlight comes from the north
🏠 Check whether your house, fence or trees will shade the area
🥬 Got part shade? Try leafy greens such as lettuce and silverbeet, or blueberries

Watch how the sun moves across your garden before deciding where to place your veggie patch.

Do rabbits REALLY love carrots? 🥕🐰

Cartoons would have us believe carrots are every rabbit’s favourite food… but are they?

I put it to the taste test with Coco. 😂

🥕 Carrots are high in sugar, so they’re best kept as an occasional treat rather than an everyday food.
