Hello and welcome to PARKING Part Two for the Ipswich Plant & Lifestyle Fair!

One of my favourite places to suggest is Brisbane Street. Pop the intersection of Burnett Street and Brisbane Street into Google Maps and you’ll find yourself at the Top of Town, Ipswich QLD 4305.

Not only can you find free street parking along Brisbane Street and the surrounding streets, but you also get the opportunity to explore some of our wonderful local businesses.

There are beautiful little shops, cafés and restaurants open on Saturday mornings, so why not grab a coffee, have a wander and enjoy a little more of Ipswich while you’re here?

From there, it’s a lovely, mostly flat walk straight down Brisbane Street to the Nicholas Street Precinct

Another great option is Limestone Street!

There is street parking along Limestone Street, and you can walk straight through d’Arcy Doyle Place into Nicholas Street.

You can also look for parking along Ellenborough Street and the surrounding streets.

Many of these areas are only around a five-minute walk from the fair, depending on exactly where you find a spot and all are free.

So please, don’t be put off by the idea of parking in the city.

Use Google Maps, have a little look around before you arrive and perhaps make a morning of it.

Come for the plants, stay for the coffee, discover a few wonderful Ipswich businesses and enjoy our beautiful city centre.

And one final thing. Please remember I am a horticulturist and plant fair organiser, NOT a professional reel maker. We’re all just going to have to work with what I’ve managed to create here! 😂

Feeling hungry? Good, because the food side of the fair is looking very dangerous.

This year we have a proper mix of savoury and sweet, so you can absolutely arrive hungry, eat your way around the precinct and still somehow justify a brownie later.

Gold Coast Brathaus is back, so if you are in the mood for proper bratwurst-style fare, that box is well and truly ticked.

Wok Master QLD will be bringing fresh wok-cooked Asian street food, with fried rice, noodles and plenty more coming straight from the wok.

Then there is Zero Forks Given. Their thing is bold, flavour-driven street food without overcomplicating it. Both of them are trade-qualified chefs, so this is not just a food van throwing a few things on a grill and hoping for the best.

And then, because apparently we need absolutely no restraint at all, House of Poffertjes will be there with those little Dutch pancakes that somehow disappear far faster than seems reasonable.

So the basic fair plan is now:
Buy plants.
Find food.
Sit down for five minutes.
Buy more plants.
Find something sweet.
Repeat as required.

And that is before you even get to Baked By Brooke, Gathered Grains and the coffee.

Honestly, nobody is leaving hungry.

Stallholder Spotlight: Beleaf in Gardens

Beleaf is back again, and this time they are bringing a lot.

What I like about this stall is that it is not just about buying a plant and hoping for the best. It is everything around the plant too. How you grow it, support it, pot it, feed it and actually keep it looking good once you get it home.

There will be rare, indoor and exotic plants, specialised soil blends, Super Coarse Perlite, Tree Fern Fibre, Pon, moss poles, clear pots, moss pole drippers and all the bits you need to set climbing plants up properly.

Then there are the terrariums.

You can buy one already made, or go full creative mode and build your own with the plants, soils, drainage layers, separation layers, crystals and materials all there in one place.

They are also bringing their slump bowl plants again, either ready-made or as all the components you need to create your own version at home.

And because apparently that was not enough, there will also be GT fertilisers, We the Wild Neem Spray and a heap of other plant-growing goodies.

This is where their landscaping background really shows.

Beleaf in Gardens is part of Absolute Landscaping & Design, so behind all the products is more than a decade of horticulture and landscape construction experience.

That means if you are standing there thinking, I know what I like but I have no idea how to pull it all together, these are the people to talk to.

Plants, growing media, supports, terrariums, garden design knowledge and all the fiddly little things that make plant growing easier.

Dangerous territory, really.

You may go in for one plant and leave with an entire new system for growing it.

Stallholder Spotlight: Ipswich Woodcrafts Club Inc. Qld

There is something deeply satisfying about watching someone take a plain piece of timber and turn it into something beautiful with their own hands.

That is exactly what the Ipswich Woodcrafts Club has been doing since 1988. What began as a woodturning club has grown into a wonderfully broad community of makers working across woodturning, carving, scroll saw work, pyrography, box making, toy making and all sorts of other woodcraft.

What I really like about this group is that they are not just there to show you what they can make. They want you to have a go too. The club runs hands-on classes, workshops and demonstrations, and whether you are a complete beginner or someone who already knows their way around a workshop, there is a real emphasis on sharing skills and keeping those traditional crafts alive.

Things like woodturning, carving and pyrography are not just hobbies. They are skills passed from person to person, and clubs like this are where that knowledge stays alive.

At the fair, you can see some of the work, meet the people behind it, ask questions, learn about memberships and workshops, and maybe discover a hobby you never expected to fall into.

So if you have ever looked at a handmade timber piece and thought, I would love to know how they did that, this is your chance to ask.

Your next obsession may very well begin with a block of wood and someone showing you where to start.

Stallholder Spotlight: Vanderbyl Vireya Nursery
NEW STALLHOLDER ALERT

I am so fricking excited about this one. I adore Vireyas, but I have always been a little hesitant with them because I have never felt completely confident about which ones would actually suit me, my garden and our conditions. And now I get to ask the grower.

That is exactly why having a specialist like Vanderbyl Vireya Nursery at the fair is such a big deal for me.

Based in northern New South Wales, Vanderbyl Vireya Nursery specialises in tropical Vireya Rhododendrons and Medinilla.

Vireyas deserve so much more attention than they get. They can be lush, sculptural and incredibly floriferous, with flowers that can look almost unreal, and I honestly think they can fit into almost any garden style.
Cottage garden? Absolutely.
Tropical garden? Obviously.
Subtropical courtyard, shaded patio, collector’s corner, mixed garden with beautiful foliage and flowers? Yes to all of it.

That is what I love about them. They are not one-look plants and for anyone like me who has admired them from a safe distance because they seem a little mysterious, this is the perfect opportunity to stop guessing.

Talk to the people who actually grow them. Ask which Vireyas handle your conditions best. Ask about light. Ask about pots versus garden beds. Ask about watering, feeding and flowering. Ask which ones are easier to start with. That sort of specialist knowledge is exactly what this fair is full of.

I strongly suspect this is the fair where I finally stop admiring Vireyas from afar and actually bring one home.

Stallholder Spotlight: Kelly Hanson - Clinical Nutritionist - Supporting Metabolic Health
NEW STALLHOLDER ALERT

What do people and plants have in common? Quite a lot, apparently.

We both need water, nourishment, sunlight and regular care, and neither tends to thrive particularly well when ignored for long periods and then given one enormous dose of attention. Which is why I think Kelly Hanson fits rather beautifully into the lifestyle side of this fair.

Kelly is an Ipswich-based Clinical Nutritionist and Registered Nurse, with a background in cardiac and critical care nursing. After years of seeing people when health problems had already become serious, her work now focuses much more on the everyday things we can do to support our health along the way.

Food. Lifestyle. Habits. Understanding what is happening in our bodies and working out where we might realistically start.

And I particularly like Kelly’s approach because this is not about walking past her stall and being told you need to completely overhaul your life by Monday. Small steps count.

At the fair, Kelly will be offering free cardiometabolic health assessments and the opportunity to have a proper conversation about heart and metabolic health, what your results might mean and what practical changes could be worth exploring.

So amongst buying plants, eating raspberry blondies and convincing yourself that another pot definitely fits in the car, perhaps take a few minutes to check in on yourself as well.

You will find Kelly outside under the awning between the chemist and the gelato shopfront, a location she is, understandably, very happy with. Because apparently balance includes knowing exactly where the gelato is.

As a member of the Horticultural Media Association Australia, I receive their weekly email, The Friday BLAST!, filled with horticultural news, stories and insights from across the industry.

Well, imagine my little thrill today when I opened it and discovered a link to an article I had written about the Ipswich Plant and Lifestyle Fair

I write a lot. Anyone who knows me knows I can turn a simple thought into a rather lengthy conversation (or an even lengthier blog!).

But there is something quite special about seeing my words sitting amongst those of such respected and knowledgeable horticultural professionals.

No matter how many blogs or posts I write for myself, moments like this still give me a little thrill.

When you’re busy doing your own thing in your own corner, it’s lovely to see your voice find its way a little further.

Thank you, Hort Media Australia, for giving me the opportunity to share my story, my thoughts and a little piece of what I’ve been working so hard to create.

Stallholder Spotlight: Baked By Brooke

Now, at most plant fairs people rush the plant stalls first. At this fair, apparently my boys rush Baked By Brooke. I have genuinely been known to pay my youngest in raspberry blondies, and he is completely fine with that arrangement.

Brooke has been baking since 2012, building Baked By Brooke from family recipes, fresh ingredients and the kind of proper baking that creates very loyal customers very quickly.

Based in Laidley in the Lockyer Valley, her range moves between old-fashioned favourites and modern treats: dark chocolate brownies, Monte Carlos with locally made Rosella jam, cupcakes, celebration cakes, blondies and plenty of gluten-free and vegan options too.

And now she has added something new. Baked By Brooke Brownie Mix. So if you would rather take the danger home and bake your own, you can do that too.

Baked By Brooke has become part of Trevallan life through the gluten-free and Vegan cakes and treats she supplies us, so I already know how dangerous this stall is.

Coffee in one hand.
Raspberry blondie in the other.
Plant fair nutrition sorted.
