Out at Pierces Creek, we've just finished a 28x12 metre farm shed.

This shed's split into two zones, an open bay on one end for machinery and a workshop on the other. The workshop has an awning off the front, which keeps rain and sun off the roller doors so you can work with them open without the weather getting in the way.

To keep costs down on a big machinery shed like this, we went with a dirt floor and piers under the columns instead of a full slab. It means you get more shed under roof without the extra cost. We've also fitted security screws on the overlap sheets.

If you're after big sheds, this is what it looks like when Stockman goes all out on a shed build.
51 metres long, 12 metres wide and a 7-metre awning - this shed comes in at nearly 1,000 square metres under roof.

It's finished in Monument® Trimdek with Night Sky® doors and trims. Five roller doors, each 5x5 metres, give you room to park two cars side by side without any tight squeezes.

On the open bays and lean-tos, we use SHS posts instead of C-section. They give a cleaner finish and skip the sharp edges and rubbish buildup you get with C-section posts over time.

A shed this size needs a concrete slab to match. This one's 150mm thick, SL92 mesh, 32 MPa concrete, using over 200 cubes of concrete in total.

We're at Our Lady of Lourdes School in Newtown, Toowoomba, where the boys have just wrapped up a school shed build.

This is a 6x9 metre shed with a 3 metre laneway on the front, and it's built heavy duty for its size. We've used Z150 steel on both the walls and roof to handle the 6 metre bay needed for a double door on the side. Roof and wall insulation is Kingspan, Australian made, and it keeps the heat out while looking sharp.

Around the joins, we've used colour-coded silicone instead of the usual clear stuff you get with a shed kit. It's a small detail, but it makes the whole shed look seamless. Since this is a school shed, compliance mattered too, so we've fitted 920 doors with lever handles at both ends.

The whole job, earthworks, slab and install, was squeezed into the school holidays and finished in about a week and a half. A solid effort from the team to get it done in that window.

There’s a reason American Barns are so popular on acreage properties.

This recent Stockman Sheds build in the Samford Valley combines the classic American Barn profile with plenty of practical space, custom windows and a striking Manor Red and Ironstone finish.

The raised central gable, stepped roofline and custom barn-style window give this shed plenty of character, while the side awnings and sliding windows add useful covered space and natural light.

It’s a great example of what you can achieve when a shed is designed around the property rather than pulled from a standard template.

HUGE Carport Shed in Pierces Creek | Acreage Garage from Stockman Sheds

Out at Pierces Creek, near Toowoomba, we've just wrapped up the first of two custom sheds for a lovely couple on their acreage property.

This one's a 10.5 by 7 metre carport, built extra deep so both doors can open without clipping the car parked beside it. Around the back, there's an enclosed bay housing a generator for their off-grid power system.

The cladding is horizontal corrugated iron to match the existing house, which means battening the walls out at 450 centres to get the fixing right. More work, but in the right setting it looks the part.

Shed Toy Series Ep. 3: The Rare 2002 Holden VY GTS

Episode three of the Shed Toy Series, and this one's a proper icon.
This is a 2002 Holden VY GTS, only 170 of these were ever built, which makes it one of the rarest cars on the road. Under the bonnet is a 300 kilowatt Callaway LS1, pushed past a standard HSV with a 102mm throttle body, a different cam and a custom tune. Inside, it's got the chain mail interior and Coulson seats that hold you in place, built for the track as much as the street.
300 kilowatts doesn't turn heads like it used to, but back in 2002, this was as good as Australian muscle got. Holden made some beautiful cars, and it's a shame they're not around to make more.

Shed Council Approvals: A Quick Guide

Planning a shed on your property? Council approval comes first.

The standard side boundary distance is 1.5 metres for sheds up to nine metres long and three and a half high. Want to build closer? You can, through a relaxation process where council reviews your application. It costs a bit more, but it often gets you a bigger shed closer to the boundary.

Retaining walls have their own rules too. More than 1.5 metres from a retaining wall under a metre high, and you're self-assessable, no approval needed. Closer than that, you'll need engineering certification.

Stormwater from your roof needs to end up three metres from your shed and your boundary, whether that's a tank or a bubbler.

This 15m by 10m shed slab on Hilltop Drive was poured with a drop edge beam and 32MPA concrete, and there's a good reason for it. Tanks in the way left no room to retain, so the drop edge beam let us keep the same footprint without losing space to a batter.

It costs more than a standard edge, since it takes extra concrete and formwork, but it holds up and looks tidy.

Every slab we pour gets a rebated edge cut into the concrete rather than the plastic strips some builders use, because plastic cracks and breaks down in the sun.

We’ve gone with a nicely burnt finish here. Stay away from broom finishes - they’re hard to keep clean and show every mark.

This customer's shed will have an in-built bathroom, plus a bar area out front overlooking the view. We build fully custom sheds, so we’re happy to incorporate extra details like that.
