Biosecurity Tasmania are proposing new regulations which would require non-commercial growers (home and community gardens) to participate. They want ALL people who are growing and distributing berries, leafy vegetables and melons to meet restrictive regulations. This is likely to result in home and community growers stopping the easy sharing and distribution of food, including at the popular food share stands spread across the state.
I share UTAS Senior Lectuurer in law, Dr Olivia Rundle’s call for Biosecurity “to conduct a phase 3 process before implementing the PPP Standards and
associated regulatory system. The following activities should be part of phase 3:
1. Consult to co-create solutions
2. Refocus on the goals of the Standards
3. Simplify and clarify
4. Resource realistic regulation
5. Ensure consistency with the Standards
6. Relationship repair with people who grow food in Tasmania”
