This one was a little different for us.

A customer contacted OFF GRID POWER PRODUCTS asking if we could manufacture a Lithium LiFePO₄ battery for his electric fishing reel.

It's not something we've built before, so after receiving his requirements, we spent several restless nights researching, designing and testing a solution that would work within his specific parameters.

The end result was a complete custom-built system featuring:

✅ 16Ah 12.8V Lithium LiFePO₄ battery

✅ Built-in voltage display

✅ Bluetooth compatibility

✅ On/Off isolation switch

✅ 20A constant charge capability

✅ 30A constant discharge capability

✅ Custom 5A charger

✅ Designed to fit perfectly inside his waterproof shoulder bag

✅ Complete kit weighs only 5.2kg (excluding charger and reel)

After upgrading to one of our lithium setups 👇

The difference was immediate.

Fast forward 4 months…

Same issue again.

The new battery?

Also had melted terminals.

At that point, it was pretty clear the problem wasn’t just “a bad battery” — it was the limitations of the setup.

That’s when Aaron decided to upgrade.

So what do you do in that situation?

Aaron had two options:

🔹 Replace the failing battery ($600)
🔹 Upgrade to a lithium setup ($2100)

Like most people, he went with the cheaper option first.

He replaced the damaged battery and kept running the same setup.

Problem solved… for now.

Here’s what was happening 👇

Aaron’s buggy runs 6 x 6V lead acid batteries (standard 36V setup).

His local course finishes with a long, steep hill — right at the end of the day.

After a full round, when the batteries were already low, the buggy had to work harder to get up that hill.

That meant higher current draw to the motors…

And over time, that heat started causing damage.

The battery terminals were slowly melting.

A different kind of battery issue I came across recently 👇

Aaron was running a 36V golf buggy setup with traditional lead acid batteries.

Everything worked… until it didn’t.

It wasn’t the batteries dying that caused the problem — it was something a bit more unexpected.

I’ll explain over the next few posts.

This is where it really went downhill 👇

Freight costs alone made it almost not worth sending the battery back.

So James contacted me and asked if I could test it for him locally.

I carried out a full function test and put together a detailed report.

There were multiple faults with the battery.

Even with that report — he still couldn’t get a refund or replacement.

At that point, the battery was basically useless.
