🪰 MYTH MONDAY: Flies only live for 24 hours… right? ❌

Despite the common myth, adult flies can actually live for several weeks — and during that time, they can reproduce very quickly! 😳

From egg ➡️ larva ➡️ pupa ➡️ adult, their life cycle can move fast, which is why a small fly problem can suddenly seem like a whole lot of flies.

If you’re noticing an unusual increase in flies around your home, there may be more going on than meets the eye. 👀

🔍 HOME PROTECTION FRIDAY – PEST DETECTIVE!

Time to crack another pest case! 🕵️‍♀️

Take a look at the clues in this week’s image… Can you work out what pest we’re looking for? 👀

🥁 The answer: EUROPEAN WASPS! 🐝

European wasps are distinctive with their bright yellow and black markings, but sometimes the first thing you notice isn’t the wasp itself — it’s increased activity around a particular area.

You may notice wasps regularly flying in and out of the same spot around:
🏠 Eaves and roof spaces
🪵 Sheds and sheltered areas
🌳 Gardens and vegetation
🧱 Gaps or cavities around structures
🕳️ Ground-level nest entrances

⚠️ If you notice a steady stream of wasps entering and leaving one location, don’t disturb or attempt to remove the nest yourself. European wasps can become defensive when their nest is threatened and are capable of stinging multiple times.

Sometimes being a good Pest Detective means knowing when not to investigate any closer! 😂

👇 Did you guess European wasps from the clues?

🪰 WILDLIFE WEDNESDAY – Why are blowflies suddenly at your windows?

Ever noticed a sudden cluster of blowflies hanging around your windows? There may be a reason they’re all heading to the same spot. 👀

Blowflies are naturally drawn towards light, which is why they often gather around windows when they’re trying to find their way outside. But if you suddenly notice more blowflies than usual inside your home, it can sometimes be worth investigating where they’re coming from.

Common sources can include:
🗑️ Food waste or overflowing bins
🐾 Pet food left out
🍗 Food scraps or spills
🐀 A deceased rodent or animal in a roof, wall cavity or other inaccessible area
🏠 Other decaying organic matter around the property

Sometimes the flies you’re seeing at the window are simply the most noticeable part of the problem — the actual source may be somewhere else entirely.

If you’ve suddenly got a blowfly problem and can’t work out why, Scorpion Pest Management can help investigate the cause. 🦂

🏆🦂 WE’RE SEMI-FINALISTS! 🦂🏆

We’re incredibly excited to share that Scorpion Pest Management has officially been named a Semi-Finalist in the Tasmanian Community Achievement Awards! 🎉

After recently sharing the exciting news that we had been nominated, finding out that we’ve now progressed to the semi-finalist stage is something our whole team is incredibly proud of. ❤️

As a locally owned and operated Tasmanian business, we’ve always aimed to do more than simply provide pest management services. Supporting our local community, looking for more sustainable ways of doing things, and continuing to grow and improve have always been important parts of who we are.

To have those efforts recognised at a state level means a great deal to us. 🥹

A massive THANK YOU to our amazing team, our loyal customers and everyone in the community who continues to support Scorpion. You’re all part of the journey that has brought us here.

Now we wait to see what comes next… 🤞🏆

But for today, we’re pretty happy to say:

🌸 BYE BYE WINTER… HELLO SPRING! 🌸

The days are getting longer, the weather is starting to warm up, and we’re finally saying goodbye to winter! ☀️🌿

But we’re not the only ones becoming more active as the temperatures rise… 👀🐜🕷️🪰

Spring is when pest activity starts to pick up, with ants, spiders, flies and other unwanted visitors beginning to make their presence known around our homes.

Now is a great time to:

🏠 Check around your home for gaps and entry points
🌿 Trim vegetation away from the house
🧹 Clear out those garages, sheds and storage areas
🍂 Keep gutters and outdoor areas tidy
🔍 Keep an eye out for the early signs of pest activity

Getting on top of the little things now can help prevent bigger pest problems as we head towards summer.

So here’s to warmer weather, longer days and hopefully fewer unwanted house guests! 😂🌸

Need a hand getting your home spring-ready? Give the Scorpion team a call. 🦂

🐭 MYTH MONDAY!

MYTH: “I’ve only seen one mouse, so it can’t be much of a problem.”

Unfortunately, the mouse you see may not be the only one hanging around! 👀

Mice are great at staying hidden and can reproduce quickly, so a single sighting can sometimes be an early sign of more activity nearby.

Keep an eye out for other clues such as:
🐭 Droppings
🔍 Chew marks
🏠 Nesting material
👂 Scratching or movement, particularly at night
🐾 Footprints or greasy smudge marks

Catching rodent activity early can make a big difference. If you’ve spotted a mouse or noticed signs around your home, it may be worth having the area inspected before a small issue becomes a bigger one.

🔍 HOME PROTECTION FRIDAY – PEST DETECTIVE!

Think you can crack this week’s case? 🕵️‍♀️

These little clues can easily go unnoticed around carpets, skirting boards and other quiet areas of the home. You might notice tiny shed skins, small larvae or damage to carpet and natural fibres before you ever spot the adult pest. 👀

So… what pest left this behind?

🥁 The answer: CARPET BEETLES! 🪲

It’s actually the larvae that cause the damage. They feed on natural fibres and materials such as wool, fur, feathers and other animal-based products, and they love dark, undisturbed areas.

Common places to check include:
🔎 Along carpet edges and skirting boards
🔎 Under furniture
🔎 Inside wardrobes and cupboards
🔎 Around stored fabrics and clothing
🔎 Other quiet, rarely disturbed areas

Finding shed larval skins or unexplained damage can be an important clue that carpet beetles are active nearby.

Jason, Jordan & Shannon out in Strathgordon, with the Tassie wilderness putting on a pretty good show behind them. 🌿⛰️

It’s great to have Shannon back with Team Scorpion and already back out on the road with some familiar faces!

🕷️ WILDLIFE WEDNESDAY!

Spiders are an important part of our environment and actually help keep other insect populations under control — but that doesn’t necessarily mean we want them setting up home inside ours! 🏠🕷️

As the weather warms up and insect activity increases, you may start noticing more spiders around windows, eaves, sheds and other quiet areas.

A few simple things can help make your home less inviting:
✔️ Keep clutter to a minimum
✔️ Seal gaps around doors and windows
✔️ Check screens on windows and vents
✔️ Remove old webs from around the exterior
✔️ Be mindful of outdoor lighting attracting insects at night

And remember — seeing more spiders can sometimes mean there’s plenty of food around for them too! 🪰🦟

If spider activity around your property is becoming a little too close for comfort, give our team a call. 🦂
