🌿💛 HAPPY NATIONAL WATTLE DAY! 🇦🇺

Today we celebrate Australia’s golden wattle. Our national floral emblem and a symbol of resilience, unity and the Australian spirit.

For First Nations Australians, wattle species have long held important cultural, practical and ecological significance, with different wattles traditionally used for food, tools, medicine and other purposes across Australia.

For modern Australia, the golden wattle has become a proud symbol of Australian identity, mateship and strength, with its bright golden flowers and green foliage reflecting the colours of our national identity. 💚💛

So today, take a moment to appreciate one of our most iconic native plants. 🌿

PROPERTY VALUE ADDING HACK 101

This part of my clients property looked terrible before and really detracted from the value of the property. Real estate valuation before this and some other minor landscape works VS after was in the range of 15-20% of the final sale price!
In total the owner spent $32k on landscape works and more than doubled that investment on final sale price!!

CORTEN STEEL EDGING 💪

Steel vs Timber??
For me steel wins hands down when it comes to non structural decorative edging and even some structural applications. I’ve been installing steel for longer than I can remember and here’s why!!
✅ When installed correctly steel doesn’t twist, bow or warp the way most non hardwood timbers will.
✅ Steel won’t rot or be prone to ant or termite invasion.
✅ 3mm steel has a lifespan of between 30-50 years depending on local corrosion conditions.
✅ Steels thin profile offers a sleek and modern finish.
✅ Steel provides flexibility in design enabling smooth curves and transitions from straight to curved to be achieved seamlessly.

CARROTS 🥕🥕🥕
They’re a staple in my garden so I grow them in bulk and pretty much year round. I find them easy to grow and I think you will too if you follow some of these steps.
PIC 1 - Turn soil over and loosen thoroughly to a depth of approx 20-30cm. Remove rocks and anything that’s not loose soil. I like to add a few shovels of compost and mix through at the same time. Create shallow furrows around 5mm deep running from North to South and approx 10-15cm apart.
PIC 2 - Carrot seeds should always be sown direct in final position. Seeds are tiny and hard to handle. I use a medicine cup to distribute them into the furrow taking care not to spill or tip too many seeds into the same part of the furrow.
PIC 3 - Seeds visible in furrows.
PIC 4 - Cover seeds with soil that was moved aside to create furrows at the beginning. Water in lightly.
PIC 5 - Bed of carrots prepared earlier. At this stage I go though and thin out rows by removing smaller carrots giving already larger stronger carrots room to grow!

Pro Tips - Applying a layer of pea straw mulch as carrots grow will help retain moisture in soil. Avoid high nitrogen fertilisers as they encourage strong foliage at the expense of the carrot itself. I use liquid Seasol and Potash to boost the size and strength of my carrots.

But seriously I’ve got worms and they are the hardest working part of the Enviro X Gardens team (I’m a close second) 😂

I’m a BIG BELIEVER that worm farms are the best method of processing food leftovers and
I’ve tried that many different store bought versions over the years.
Of course nature does it best beneath our very feet. Keep in mind the earth below is not a multi tier system and it’s definitely not a tumbling system that turns itself over to process organic matter on the surface.
Material simply sits on the earths surface and is processed from beneath and above by worms, animals, bugs, etc etc
In my mind this makes worm farm or compost bins that are multi tiered or tumbling style useless.

HUNGRY BIN WORM FARM
I’ve been using the Hungry Bin Worm Farm for more than 5 years now and it simply works!! Add fresh brown and green material on the surface, cover with a protective blanket and the worms do the rest!
Harvest amazing fresh compost/worm castings from the removable base and collect worm tea in the tray below.
✅ Very few worms want to leave when conditions are kept nice within the farm.
✅ I top up material on average once a week. Once established (1-3 months) the farm is almost self sufficient.
✅ Bin has a huge capacity unlike multi tiered systems that hold a tiny amount of material between tiers.
✅ Pests can’t access food scraps as it’s a closed lid system unlike traditional compost heaps that are constantly being disturbed by birds, rats, mice etc
