One of the biggest benefits of cohousing for Ruth and her family has been the experience of having her mum live so close by. But not in the same house! Intergenerational living, beyond the nuclear family, can benefit everyone. Young children can learn from elders, parents get support, and older residents escape isolation. From incidental interactions to planned gatherings, cohousing offers a unique opportunity for connected living.

Swipe for some satifying before and after photos from The Victoria Street Collective in West Brunswick.
Completed in 2024, these buildings and shared garden now support a thriving intergenerational community with a productive communal garden at the heart of the community. What could be more satisfying than that?

When communities form with the intention to not only live near each other but to share experiences together, the opportunities for connection are endless. Ruth Giles from the Victoria Street Collective in West Brunswick shares one recent example of how her neighbours came together to celebrate a cultural event using shared community spaces to overcome the hurdles of Melbourne weather.

From render to reality in West Brunswick. Two phases of a kitchen design, from idea to lived in and loved home. Nice to look back and reflect on the journey of this group build, now that The Victoria Street Collective have now very much moved in and settled into their new homes. `

What is the benefit of the "group build" process that Property Collectives offers?

For Ruth it was the sense of ownership and control that came from being able to make some of the core choices about their future homes, whilst also benefitting from the economy of scale that can't be achieved if you build on your own.

Community in action. The Victoria Street Collective is designed around a communal shared garden. Working together they chose plants, prepared their compost, and have turned this relatively small space into a thriving central hub for shared experiences and even some food production.

How can we put housing development back into the hands of the households who live in them?

Ruth Giles spearheaded the Victoria Street cohousing collective throughout the unstable landscape of 2020-2022 Melbourne lockddowns and COVID era. She experienced first-hand the impacts it had on her project. We asked her what she thought government could do to support every-day people, such as herself, build more housing projects that genuinely nurture community connection and neighbourlyness.

Community is something we build and work on together.

Brougham Street Cohousing have taken this idea to heart in their journey.

The owners have gathered regularly for the past few years to socialise and work on projects as a community.

Last year they came together on a gloriously sunny day in Eltham to repair the mud-brick rendering on their heritage cottage (and future common house).

Brougham Street Cohousing recently celebrated a significant milestone in their journey with a topping out celebration. The future residents came on to site to get a glimpse of their future homes, some of them event traveling from interstate for this memorable day. We joined representatives from Group Architecture and Bank Australia to take a tour of the site as the residents got to stand on the foundations of their future homes for the very first time.

Ruth shares with us the magic of living in a group build cohousing project built with Property Collectives.

She describes the "pinch-yourself" feeling of actually living in a home that only a few years earlier had been a dream.

Projects like the Victoria Street Collective are the culmination of years of planning, developling, and hard work from many, but it is all for one purpose, to build special places that will be called home.
