Light. Shade. Airflow. All from the one outdoor roof.

This 7.2m × 3.1m GMC Sun Blade louvre roof in Lambton, Newcastle is a good example of why an opening roof can work so well over an outdoor living area.

Rather than permanently covering the space with a fixed roof, the adjustable louvres give the homeowner control over how the area feels throughout the day.

☀️ Open the louvres to bring natural light into the outdoor area and adjoining home.

🌬️ Adjust them to encourage airflow while still providing shade.

🏡 Close them when full cover is needed.

The photos really tell the story — particularly the pattern of light and shade created across the area when the louvres are open.

Finished with a Light Grey frame and Surfmist louvres, keeping the overall structure light and clean against the existing home.

GMC Sun Blade | Designed to become part of the 🏡

It’s been a pleasure for GMC to play a part in this beautifully considered outdoor space.

Our GMC Sun Blade Louvre Roof was seamlessly integrated with the existing steel structure, allowing us to keep additional posts and fixtures to a minimum and maintain the open feel of the entertaining area.

Finished in Pearl White, the opening roof provides control over sunlight, shade and protection when needed, while still allowing the space to open up to the sky.

Integrated LED lighting runs throughout the roof, with double LEDs through the centre above the dining table, providing additional light exactly where it’s needed.

What we particularly like about this project is how naturally the Sun Blade works within the overall design. It adds functionality and year-round versatility without taking away from the architecture or the beautiful space the clients have created.

A wonderful result, and one we’re very pleased to have played a part in.

A little extra thought makes a big difference. ☀️

This south-facing outdoor area in Nelson Bay needed weather protection, but we also wanted to make the most of the natural light available to the home.

The result is a 6.0 m × 2.7 m GMC Sun Blade Louvre Roof, finished completely in Pearl White with 150 × 150 mm posts.

With the louvres open, sunlight and airflow can reach the space. When the weather changes, the roof can be closed — with everything conveniently operated from the homeowner’s smartphone.

We also added a small finishing touch we really like on this project: a hidden downpipe. No exposed pipe running down the post, just a cleaner, more considered finish.

It’s not always the big things that make the difference. Good outdoor design is often about getting the little details right too.
