What exactly is a SIPS home? 🤔

SIPS (Structural Insulated Panel Systems) are one of the main reasons our homes perform so differently from a traditional build.

Instead of building wall-by-wall on site, SIPS are precision-made panels with insulation built right into the structure. They arrive ready to install, which means faster construction, less waste, and a much more accurate build.

But the real difference is in how the home feels to live in.

A well-designed SIPS home is more airtight, helping to keep temperatures stable year-round. That means a warmer home in winter, a cooler home in summer, lower energy bills, and a quieter, more comfortable living environment.

Meet Sam 👋

Or should we say… remember Sam? 😄

This is a bit of a throwback photo from when Sam was rocking the long hair. These days he’s swapped the flowing locks for a much shorter haircut, but he’s still the same bloke helping keep our projects running smoothly.

As our Site Supervisor and Leading Hand, Sam plays a huge role in turning plans into reality. He’s on site coordinating trades, keeping an eye on quality, solving problems, and making sure every build meets the standard we expect at Hycon.

He’s also one of the reasons our clients enjoy the building process so much. Calm under pressure, easy to get along with, and always willing to go the extra mile.

What are blower door tests?

It’s a simple test that tells us how much air is leaking through the building envelope. The fan creates a pressure difference, and from there we can measure how airtight the home actually is.

Why do we bother?

Because a home can look great on the outside, but if it’s leaking air everywhere, it’s going to be harder to heat, harder to cool, and less comfortable to live in.

We put a lot of effort into getting the details right during construction, and this is one of the ways we check our work. It’s not about ticking boxes, it’s about making sure the home performs the way it was designed to.

The best part is that homeowners might never see this test happen, but they’ll definitely notice the difference when they’re living in the home.

David and Nicole Hynes started Hycon Homes with a simple belief, Australians deserve homes that are comfortable, energy-efficient, and built to last.

After years of renovating cold, draughty homes while raising their family, they discovered SIPS construction and saw a better way to build. What started as a backyard bungalow project soon became a mission to help others build healthier, high-performing homes that work for the people living in them.

Today, Hycon Homes is still very much a family-run business, built on practical experience, genuine relationships, and a passion for doing things differently.
