A recent trip to China gave me the opportunity to explore some truly breathtaking gardens. Even in late winter/early spring, they were beautifully maintained, with every garden showing that a little work during the colder months makes all the difference when spring arrives.
It was a great reminder that winter isn't a time to ignore your garden. It's the perfect season to prepare it for the months ahead.
Here are a few winter gardening tips for the South West of WA:
🌿 Prune deciduous trees and shrubs while they're dormant.
🍂 Clear away fallen leaves and tidy garden beds to help prevent pests and disease.
🌱 Apply a slow-release fertiliser to prepare plants for strong spring growth.
🌾 Top up mulch to protect roots, retain moisture and keep weeds under control.
🌧️ Check drainage after heavy rain and make sure water isn't pooling around plants.
🌹 Get on top of weeds now before they take off in spring.
Spring will be here before we know it, and the work you do now will reward you with a healthier, more vibrant garden when the warmer weather returns.
