I love creeping on the boys site photos to watch our beautiful pools unfold. This is a recent round pool we’re putting the finishing touches on in Gymea. I love it because they could have just gone with a rectangle but they chose to make a statement with a circle.

I’ve been diving into backyard pools for as long as I can remember. Our pool, the neighbours’ pool, pools at resorts, even the local public pool... if there was water, I was going in head first.

I can’t really put into words what it is about having a pool in my own backyard that makes me so happy, but it really does.

And it’s not even the big summer days I love most anymore. It’s the warm mornings when I wander out the back, put some music on, make a coffee and do not much of anything except potter around the yard. The pool’s just sitting there doing its thing, and it makes me feel so lucky that this is what I get to do for a living.

I always tell clients to think about those mornings when we’re designing, like where you’ll actually sit with your coffee and whether the sun hits that spot early, because the party days are great but it’s the everyday stuff you end up loving it for.

Anyway, this is me mid-dive, and my love for pools hasn’t changed a bit.

Everyone thinks a pool is for when the kids are little. Floaties, sunscreen battles, someone yelling “watch me!” every eight seconds.

And it is. But that’s not what families tell me about a year or two after we finish.

They tell me about the teenagers. The pool becomes the reason the friends end up at your place. You know who they’re hanging out with. An afternoon swim turns into everyone staying for dinner, and nobody had to be bribed off their phone to make it happen.

As a mum of three, that sounds pretty good to me.

So if you’ve been thinking you missed the window because the kids are getting bigger, I’d gently argue you’re right on time, and I’m always happy to have a chat about it.

Not everyone reading this is ready to build a pool, and that’s completely fine.

Some of you are a year out. Some of you are waiting on a bonus, a reno, or a partner who still needs convincing (I see you).

Now if you're wondering what on earth a swim jet is, you're not alone. Think of it as a treadmill for swimming. It pushes a steady current at you so you can swim on the spot for as long as you like, which means no more two strokes, turn, two strokes, turn. Your backyard pool becomes a lap pool, no football field required.

I'm a bit obsessed with it for training. My kids use it for something else entirely, which mostly involves cranking it up and seeing who gets washed back to the steps first. Or Kai trying to ride the waves on his foamie!

Our weekend chores are their childhood memories. I still remember swimming in the pool while my dad was mowing the lawns and now I love nothing more than a weekend pottering around the house, with my family (by the pool, of course).

Cancel the holiday. We're resorting at home this year.

Our Bellevue Hill project is coming together so beautifully, with the client's vision of a resort-style backyard sitting right at the heart of the design.

Whenever I'm away, the part I love most is never the sightseeing. It's those long afternoons by the pool with nowhere to be, drifting from the water to a sunny spot and back again. That's the feeling we wanted here, so we've focused on creating plenty of places to sit, relax and hang out around the pool, turning the backyard into a space that feels like a holiday every single day.

If you're sick of driving to the beach to have your 'not so lazy' arvo by the water, we'd love to chat.

Jump in this toasty heated pool to test out the new igarden_au Swim Jet. It’s pretty cool in my opinion, mainly because it’s not something that needs to be built into your pool. I can already imagine my kids on their body board swimming against the waves ! Give us a call if you wanna know more!
