Spring is a great time to make your home more energy-efficient before Canberra’s warmer months arrive. In 2026, eligible ACT households can access government-supported options to help reduce upfront upgrade costs.

𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐞

Eligible households can access low-interest loans from $2,000 to $20,000, with repayment terms of up to 10 years. The current interest rate is 3%.

Eligible upgrades include:

• Home battery storage
• Reverse-cycle heating and cooling
• Heat pump hot water
• Electric cooktops
• EVs and home EV charging
• Ceiling insulation
• Electric cargo bikes

Households approved on or after 1 July 2026 can access up to $20,000.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫?

Standard rooftop solar is generally not included under the Scheme. However, eligible concession card holders may access the Home Energy Support Program, including a 50% rooftop solar rebate of up to $2,500.

Other eligible upgrades may also receive rebates, with total support of up to $5,000.

𝐁𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐮𝐩: 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐠?

10kWh, 15kWh, 20kWh or 30kWh — how long can a home battery actually keep your house running? The answer depends on more than just battery size.

If you only need to power essentials like your fridge, Wi-Fi, lights, TV and phone chargers, your battery may last much longer.But if you want to keep running air conditioning, electric hot water, cooking appliances or an EV charger, the stored energy can be used much faster.

That means the same 20kWh battery could last overnight in one home, but only a few hours in another. Another important point: Having solar and a battery does not automatically guarantee backup power during a blackout.

Your system needs to be properly designed and configured for backup, including which household circuits should stay powered.
The right battery system should be based on:
• Your daily electricity usage
• Your night-time consumption
• Your existing solar system
• Which appliances need backup power
• Whether you want air conditioning during an outage
• Future EV charging needs

And if your system allows solar to keep operating during a blackout, solar generation during the day may also help power your home and recharge the battery. A bigger battery is not always a better battery — the right system is the one designed around your home and your actual energy needs.

Already have commercial solar? A battery could be the next step. If your business exports excess solar during the day, then buys power back from the grid later, battery storage can help you make better use of the energy you already generate.

A commercial battery can help:
• Increase solar self-consumption
• Reduce grid usage during peak periods
• Support peak shaving and demand management
• Store excess solar for later use
• Support future EV charging and electrification
• Improve energy resilience

And for NSW businesses, the timing is especially relevant.From 1 September 2026, new commercial battery incentives are available for eligible projects.

Indicative discounts include:
• Battery only: around 20–30% off eligible battery installation costs
• New solar + battery: around 30–40% off eligible battery installation costs

The incentives cover systems from 20kWh through to large-scale commercial and industrial battery projects up to 30MWh. Already have solar? It may also be worth reviewing whether a solar expansion and battery upgrade could make better use of the new incentive structure.

Going all-electric can reduce gas use, but it also increases household electricity demand. Heat pump hot water, induction cooking, reverse-cycle air conditioning and EV charging all need power — which is why solar + battery storage is becoming an important part of whole-home electrification.

Australia has now installed around 4.5 million small-scale solar systems. According to the Clean Energy Regulator, around 71% of new small-scale solar systems installed in Q1 2026 were paired with battery storage.
Average system sizes in Q1 2026:
• New small-scale solar: around 10.3 kW
• Solar installed with battery: around 11.1 kW
The idea is simple: use solar during the day, store excess energy in a battery, and use it later when electricity prices are higher.

A complete electrification setup may include:
• Gas hot water → Heat pump
• Gas cooktop → Induction
• Gas heating → Reverse-cycle air conditioning
• Petrol vehicle → EV + home charger
• Rooftop solar + Battery storage

Battery storage can help increase solar self-consumption, support higher household electricity demand and, with some systems, provide backup power during outages.

There is no one-size-fits-all solution. The right solar and battery size depends on household usage, roof space, heating and hot water systems, and future EV plans.
In 2026, home energy upgrades are about more than replacing gas with electricity — they are about generating, storing and using more of your own clean energy.

Last week, Mondiaux Solar was pleased to join the Electrotechnology Taster Program at Canberra Institute of Technology Fyshwick.

We introduced Mondiaux Solar and shared practical insights into the solar and renewable energy industry, covering solar, battery storage, workplace expectations, training, and potential career pathways.

It was a great opportunity to help participants better understand how the solar industry works, the skills employers are looking for, and the opportunities available for those considering a future in the electrical and renewable energy sector.

Earlier this week, Mondiaux Solar attended the ACT GOV Sustainable Apartments Information Session to learn more about the future of apartment energy upgrades in Canberra, including EV charging, hot water systems, electrical infrastructure and renewable energy.

𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫:
Upgrading an apartment building is about much more than simply “installing solar” or replacing a few appliances.For an entire building, the bigger question is how to plan for the next 5–10 years and beyond.

𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐞:
Is the existing electrical capacity sufficient?
How should future EV charging demand be managed?
How could centralised gas hot water systems be replaced over time?
Is the roof suitable for solar?
Does battery storage make financial sense?
Can common-area energy use be further optimised?
Has future electricity demand been considered?

These are also very similar to the questions Mondiaux Solar considers when working on commercial and larger-scale energy projects.

For us, a project is not just about “how much solar can fit on the roof”. It is about how solar, battery storage, EV charging and existing electrical infrastructure can work together — while reducing unnecessary future upgrades and costs.

Another important takeaway from the session was that every apartment building is different. There is no one-size-fits-all solution, some buildings may need to prioritise electrical infrastructure first. Others may need to focus on EV charging, while some may benefit from combining solar, battery storage and common-area energy management.

NSW is introducing new battery incentive pathways for apartments, small and medium businesses, and larger commercial and industrial sites under the Peak Demand Reduction Scheme (PDRS).

Here’s the simple breakdown:

𝐁𝐄𝐒𝐒𝟑 – 𝐀𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬
For eligible apartment buildings with at least 4 residential units.
Battery size: over 20 kWh up to 200 kWh
Suitable for shared batteries, common-area energy use, solar integration and EV charging.

𝐁𝐄𝐒𝐒𝟒 – 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 & 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐮𝐦 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬
For businesses such as workshops, restaurants, retail stores, small warehouses, food distributors, cold storage and small factories.
Battery size: over 20 kWh up to 200 kWh
A battery can help businesses store excess solar, reduce peak grid usage and better manage high daytime or evening loads.

𝐁𝐄𝐒𝐒𝟓 – 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 & 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥
For larger warehouses, manufacturers, logistics facilities, food processing sites and other high-energy-use businesses.
Battery size: over 200 kWh up to 30 MWh
Incentives can apply to up to the first 10 MWh of eligible battery capacity. Larger projects also need to meet additional technical, grid connection, safety and demand-response requirements.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝟏 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔.
Unlike a fixed cash rebate, the incentive value depends on the individual project, including battery size, site energy profile, project design, eligibility and the market value of Peak Reduction Certificates.

If your business is already considering commercial solar + battery storage, it may be worth starting the assessment now. Commercial projects often require electricity data analysis, battery sizing, site assessment and grid connection work before installation.
