Most of our in-home consultations get to the same question eventually. Where does the money actually go in a bathroom renovation?
A large part of it is work you never see once the tiles are on. Demolition, plumbing, waterproofing and the preparation underneath. That part costs about the same whatever the room ends up looking like. The decisions that change the price sit on top of it, and most of them are yours.
1. Keep the layout if it works. Moving plumbing under a slab is one of the biggest costs in the job.
2. One feature wall, not four. A good plain tile on the rest of the room gives you the look for a lot less.
3. Standard sizes where they fit. Custom joinery has its place, but a well-chosen standard vanity costs less than the same thing made to measure.
4. Spend on what you touch. Tapware, the shower screen and the vanity are where a step up in quality shows.
5. Never try to save on what you cannot see. Waterproofing, the substrate and the plumbing are the foundations of the bathroom. Do not cut costs here.
