I'm a qualified and licenced Horticultural Tradesman working in Bundaberg as a gardener. Few of the multitude lawnies in Bundaberg actually have their Trade Certificate; yet alone do they know their trade as well as I do. While I do offer the standard services of lawn mowing and yard cleanups, I specialise in the more complex gardening jobs; weed eradication and management plans (Including identification and assessment, and treatment of woody weeds), basal bark applications of herbicides, chainsaw operations, garden establishment and renovations, soil testing and improvement, proper planting technique, correct tree mulching technique, and grounds maintenance. Servicing residential customers and all clients including commercial, strata, government, and NDIS.

This is how they used to fell small trees like this in QUeensland. The Trades units AHCPCM205 "Fell SMall Trees" used to specifiy for small trees that had been felled several times in the past and had not been poisoned. It was not a unit in dealing with particularly tall trees (as each felling stunts them); they were more dealing with branches like this (a network of them rather than a single trunk. That is why I used a rope to direct it away from the fence, shallower scarf to reflect the angle of the branch, and back cut 1/10 above the scarf line.

They only teach you so much at TAFE these days. But you can learn alot from talking to older tradesmen, reading a good guide, and performing your risk assessments well when planning your work.

Wild To***co is an invasive w**d belonging to the nightshade family. It is found on roadways, waterways, and pasture; tolerates poor soil, and grows easily from seed, making it an adaptable w**d.

While chemical controls are an option, I've trialled a chemical free solution to it. Tearing the bark off its lower section exposes it to infection. Done right you can kill a maturd shurb this way.

Then give it a few months to die, cut off the stmp, and mulch the area to prevent regrowth.

This is perhaps not the best video I've ever made, but it demonstrates how I learn things so I thought I'd share it anyway. FYI I tried this again on another (less brittle) stump and achieved the results I was looking for.

I learn best by a method known as "organic practice." Because I learn well all four ways of the VARK Test (Reading, discussing, watching, and doing); I find my best approach to learning new things is to first read the book on it, then discuss it with a trainer, then put my lessons into practice. I tried finding videos that show me how to use this tool but there were very few around that were reliable.

A few notes on this test. Firstly I was wrong to say the fulcrum side of it is best. Even after cutting a second back cut to fit it in (on both logs), it didn't seem to work. SO I reverted to the technique I've seen in a few videos and ads for them; using the flat side. After I had cut enough space to fit it in; it started to work (It worked better on my second attempt wich is not shown here unfortunately; I was running all over the place doing this job).

I also noticed I have the hook round the wrong way. I set it that way because I thought I'd be able to use the fulcrum easy enough, but that didn't turn out well. After looking at it and trying this, I think it would be best to have the hook the other way around so it doesn't hit my legs during felling operations, and so I can roll logs with it easier.

Just got my copy of the Minimum industry Standards for chainsaw operation and tree felling. This is the industry association's chief training manual for the chainsaw operator, and is the most detailed manual on the topic i have seen.

Its descriptions speak for themselves, coupled with handy diagrams that explain how the chainsaw is to be handlded when making thd cut. I read this advanced page while tired and it clicked. The scarf is cut deeper inward toward the center, and at a shallower angle to meet the inward cut. A bore cut is the applied to do thd back cut "from the inside out." This is going to be a good read.

Reading my copy of "To Fell A Tree" by Jeff Jepson. I find reading his books to be extremely informative, as they contain alot of tips and tricks they don't teach you at TAFE.

For instance, his description of limbing technique. When i last updated my Level One chainsaw ticket last year, they had a terrible diagram for it. The one Jepson provides is much easier to understand.

Also, they dont teach you about Spring Poles in the level 1 or 2 chainsaw ticket here in Australia. Jepson provides a pretty comprehensive explanation of how to deal with them (a series of shallow cuts above its point of most tension would be my go to where possible).

Did you know the glovebox of a Tradesman's ute can be used to store a depth of knowledge? There are a series of books around the size of an A5 page that specialise in technical knowledge of a particular trade. They take the form of technical manuals that touch on the most essential knowledge on a particular topic. I carry two manuals on Integrated W**d Management, two books on Horticultural Tree Work, a book on soil improvement, and a first aid manual (because its best practice to have).

All jokes aside about the cover photo of this book on control methods for invasive plants; it was an interesting read. Some of the information was not suited to Australian conditions, but there was a good bit of information about the ways w**ds spread, and how to contain them.

The main reason I purchased this book was because it was one of the few on the method of Integrated W**d Management that could easily fit into a glove box. There are a few other publication from Australian institutions (most notably the Grains Development Corporation), but few designed for a ute's glove box discuss the scientific method as such.

The main thing I leaned from reading "Integrated W**d Management - A Toolbox for Different W**d Control," has been the rates at which different animals pass out viable seed after digesting them. It appears most animals pass out around 5%-10% viable seeds, but chickens in particular only pass out 0.2% viable seeds. I conducted a bit of further research, and it seems this is rather unique to chickens (neither ducks nor geese are as effective at disintegrated seeds, despite my hopes they would be better for the soil).
