The Architecture Foundation Australia is an independent cultural association established in 2003 with a membership from the architecture and related professions. The objectives of the organisation are to provide educational programs, and associated cultural events, to complement the formal tertiary and professional education sectors, and to further knowledge and understanding in the field of architecture and related disciplines. To support this objective the Foundation presents conferences, master classes, lectures and other courses for professionals and senior students, organises exhibitions and has embarked upon professional book publication. The Masters Project presents Episode 10 in this series.

By now you know for more than 20 years the Glenn Murcutt International Masterclass has welcomed architects from around the world to learn from the best.

Well, in this series we continue our search for what mastery really means.

In this episode we meet Chris Johnson AO, 21st Government Architect of NSW - a role that traces its heritage back to 1816, and well before the first parliament in Macquarie St.

Chris Johnson’s time as government architect was marked by his close relationship Premier of the day, Bob Carr who led a significant programme of building and policy reform including landmark work to embed design quality in residential apartment development in NSW. The role also led much of the infrastructure needed for the 2000 Sydney Olympics as well as major public buildings like schools, hospitals and more.

Chris Johnson shares some of his long career in public life, including roles that followed his time as government architect.

To cap off a month of activity, it seems right to ask whether you bought the weekend edition of the The Australian Financial Review featuring an article on Glenn Murcutt by Michael Bleby.

This is an intelligent take on Glenn Murcutt’s life (and loss), alongside some observations on Australia’s colonial past and the enduring imprint it has left on the pattern of development in our cities today.

After a lifetime practising passive design to make the most of sunlight, shade and natural ventilation, Murcutt questions the trend to seal our buildings and rely on mechanical ventilation, with some thoughts on Australia’s Construction Code…and human behaviour.

At 90, Glenn Murcutt is not done yet.
Happy 90th Glenn Murcutt AO

To mark Glenn Murcutt’s 90th birthday, the Foundation has worked with Museums of History NSW and the owners of the iconic Littlemore House (1986) for a gathering and tour for just 60 lucky ticket holders in warm winter sunshine.

This important work was one the first examples of Murcutt applying his linear plan and passive solar responses in a tight urban setting.

The house spans boundary to boundary - one of which is shared with a small community park which allows the living spaces to be flooded with sunlight and views.

It’s been a big July. Thank you to everyone that has been a part of it; our newest Masterclass alumni that are still winding their way home and to everyone that has shared wishes to Glenn on the big milestone. Tomorrow, it’s back to the desk and the drawing board on projects that won’t design themselves….

The Murcutt Masterclass finishes with the presentation of the Murcutt Folio - a publication by 01 Editions. Together, the Foundation and publisher gift a copy of this 8kg Folio of significant works by Glenn Murcutt to an alumni, to be added to the collection of the library at a university in the home country.

In 2026, the Murcutt Folio is presented to Alexey Ivzenhko of Basire Design in Almaaty, Kazakhstan for the library in the school of architecture at SATBAYEV UNIVERSITY.

Architecture in action. A day exploring two projects by Glenn Murcutt: one is the newest that is close to completion and other an icon - the Ball Eastaway house set on 25 acres of land, north west of Sydney.

This is an invaluable opportunity to hear from Glenn on the driver of projects; clients, site, climate and regulation.

Glenn’s generous recollections range from early discussions with clients to details that originate from the site or brief - giving Masterclass participants a unique insight into the final form of projects.

Participants become alumni, and family. After 11 days in the landscape, lectures, design studio and presentations, the 2026 Murcutt Masterclass comes to an end…

Or does it?

The best things in life have a long tail - with memories resonating long after the programme close. We know this because the alumni family is a close one - with lasting connections that deepen over years and decades.

While the work may have eased, social connections continue over coming days, with visits to sites of special meaning and even new, still-unpublished projects.
