Eat Drink Design Awards choice #3: Mr Frankie

Located in Frankston South, this cafe and weekend wine bar needed a design reminiscent of the bayside without the cliche coastal theme. Bold graphic shapes and colours, with clever lighting makes for a visually interesting space and smooth vs textured finishes.

Eat Drink Design Awards #2: Paper Crane

This restaurant in Cairns, designed by CTRL Space is the ideal combination of traditional Japanese neutral yet contrasting textures, and a pop of modern colour reminiscent of the streets of Tokyo. Paper Crane is shortlisted for the Best Restaurant Design and is our pick of a great lineup.

It's time for the Eat Drink Design Awards again and we couldn't go past the beautiful reimagining of the Esplanade "Espy" Hotel in St Kilda. This has been an icon of the Melbourne music scene for many years and if walls could talk, these walls would have 140 years worth of tales to tell.โ โ

Local Spotlight: .on.wellington is a newly opened cafe, with dreamy palette and materials reminiscent of Crete; textured sandstone, mosaic-style flooring and warm peach walls.
Choosing the right textural finishes goes a long way in transforming a simple space into an experience, and this is a great example!

"Sawtooth" Queenstown
Reflecting the owner's need for a family home to showcase their art collection, this home is filled with dark joinery, plenty of local timber and space. While the black, white and timber palette has the potential to appear impersonal and dull, the use of contrasting finishes, coupled with the soft furnishing and excessive use of natural light means this design is comforting and stunning.

"The Cottages" at Lake Hayes, New Zealand
Making the most of the panoramic views of the stunning Southland scenery, this project has a rustic yet refined feel about it. All of the finishes are textural and natural in colour palette and physical form, taking inspiration from the historic woodshed it is located next to.

These pieces are all handmade, all perfectly imperfect and would all work well in styling a modern kitchen.

Restraint is just as, if not more important than the composition of a design. Often it is assumed that having restraint in the styling of a project is synonymous with minimalism, but the two are not the same!
This Colonial Revival project in California is the perfect example of intelligent design choices with an understated and timeless result.
