Something to be mindful of with pets around!

Mushrooms popping up in your backyard after all the rain?

🛑 Take care - they could make your pet very sick.

Brisbane emergency vet, Dr Tegan Hunt, said wild mushrooms have varying toxicity effects on dogs and cats if eaten.

"It can be quite mild to quite severe depending on the type of mushroom that's ingested. Usually the clinical signs we see tend to be anywhere from vomiting and diarrhea to acute liver injury and failure. They can have quite severe neurological symptoms as well.

"They can produce odours that are quite appetising to dogs and cats."

Dr Hunt said the best way to keep your pet safe was to stop them from eating mushrooms when they appear in your garden.

The main mushroom of concern for vets is the death cap, or death angel, (not pictured) which is more common in southern states.

She said if your dog or cat has eaten a wild mushroom, contact your vet straight away.

"We can induce vomiting if it’s within 20 minutes to three hours after ingestion. After that we can do things like giving them charcoal to be able to bind with any of the toxins and supportive care from there.

"Sometimes the actual clinical signs don’t start until 12 hours later so sometimes there’s a bit of a false sense of security."

Here at Acorn HQ we have established a few Native Bee Hives. Not only are native Bees essential to our eco system but assist in the pollination of your garden 🐝
A few facts.
🐝 There are over 1700 varieties of native Bee.
🐝 Native Bees are Stingless.
🐝 In Queensland and Northern NSW Bees produce a small amount of honey which is more commonly known as Sugarbag
🐝 They can build their wild nests in hollowed trees or in small wooden hives, small ones are known as Bee Hotels.
🐝 Native Bees vary in colour from black to yellow, red or even black with blue polka dots.
