Dear ANDREW,

The Queensland Building and Construction Commission (the QBCC) is continuing to improve how we communicate with you and deliver services.

As part of the Queensland Government’s Building Reg Reno, changes have been made to modernise how the QBCC communicates with licensees and how serious safety matters are reported.

STAYING CONNECTED WITH THE QBCC

From 1 February, email will be the QBCC’s preferred way of issuing notices and important correspondence—including legislative decisions such as decisions about your licence, defective work and the Queensland Home Warranty Scheme.

If you have provided an email address to the QBCC or used email to contact the QBCC about your licence or regulatory matters such as defective work and the Queensland Home Warranty Scheme, the QBCC will use this email to send you all important information, notices and decisions.

Other traditional methods of communication, such as post, may still be available in certain circumstances.

To help us stay connected, and ensure that you receive all important information, notices and decisions, please ensure your email address and contact details are up to date. It is your responsibility to ensure your details are current.

If you use an email address with your myQBCC account, we will use it to contact you, and this will be taken as your acceptance of receiving communications using this address.

What you need to do

To ensure you continue to receive up to date information from the QBCC, please update your email address at your earliest opportunity. Maintaining accurate contact details enables us to provide prompt notifications, important updates and essential correspondence without delay.

Please log in to myQBCC and make sure your email address and contact details are correct and up to date. Otherwise, get in touch with our Contact Centre team on 139 333 who can assist.

Notify us of any changes to your contact details (ongoing)

If you have given us your residential address, phone number or email address, you must notify us of any changes to those details within 14 days of the change.

Having the correct details is important so we can communicate and get in contact with you. A penalty of up to 10 penalty units may apply if you fail to notify us of a change in these details within 14 days.

Find out more on our website.

CHANGES TO HOW YOU REPORT NOTIFIABLE INCIDENTS

Changes under the Building Reg Reno are making it easier for licensees to meet notifiable incident reporting obligations.

Report directly to Workplace Health and Safety

QBCC licensees now only need to report notifiable incidents to Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ).

This information will then be shared with the QBCC, removing the need for licensees to report the same matter to multiple regulators.

This streamlined approach reduces duplication and supports simpler, more efficient reporting processes.

QBCC licensees still need to report contraventions of a notice or injunction under WHS Act or Electrical Safety Act to the QBCC.

Tougher penalties for non-reporting apply

However, this also comes with tougher penalties for failing to comply with reporting obligations for notifiable incidents, increasing from 80 penalty units to 100 penalty units.

These changes improve the flow of information between regulators, and support workers and businesses in the building and construction industry by reducing red tape, improving efficiency and streamlining reporting.

Visit the QBCC website to learn what a notifiable incident is and how to report it.

How a Septic Leach Field Works: The Final Stage of Natural Wastewater Treatment

This image illustrates the leach field (also called a drain field)—a critical component of a septic system that safely returns treated wastewater to the soil.
While the septic tank handles separation and initial breakdown, the leach field is where final purification happens naturally, using gravity, soil, microbes, and time.

1. From Septic Tank to Distribution Box
After wastewater leaves the home, it enters the septic tank, where solids settle and anaerobic bacteria begin breaking down organic matter.
The partially clarified liquid (effluent) then flows into the distribution box, shown at the top center of the image.
The distribution box’s job is simple but essential:
It evenly divides the effluent
Sends it into multiple drain lines
Prevents overloading a single area
Balanced flow is key to long-term system health.

2. Perforated Drain Pipes: Controlled Release
From the distribution box, wastewater moves into perforated drain pipes laid in shallow trenches.
These pipes are designed with evenly spaced holes that allow effluent to slowly seep out, not gush.
This slow release ensures:
Even absorption
Oxygen availability for beneficial microbes
No pooling or surface contamination
Gravity does most of the work—no pumps required in standard systems.

3. Crushed Rock / Gravel: Filtration and Oxygen
Surrounding the pipes is a bed of crushed rock or gravel, which serves multiple purposes:
Keeps soil from clogging the pipe holes
Distributes water laterally
Maintains air pockets for aerobic bacteria
These bacteria are crucial—they consume pathogens, nutrients, and remaining organic matter.

4. Soil: Nature’s Final Filter
Below and around the gravel lies the real powerhouse of the system: soil.
As water percolates downward:
Harmful bacteria are neutralized
Nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus are absorbed
Water is purified before rejoining groundwater
This process mimics natural wetland filtration, making properly designed septic systems remarkably effective and environmentally sound.

5. Why Design and Maintenance Matter
A leach field only works when:
Soil type is suitable
Trenches are correctly sized
Flow is evenly distributed
The septic tank is regularly pumped
Overloading, poor drainage, or neglect can cause failure—leading to backups, odors, or contamination.

In Summary
This image captures a quiet, gravity-powered system that relies on smart design rather than technology. When installed and maintained correctly, a leach field can function for decades, safely recycling water back into the environment with minimal energy use.
