Black turmeric

Well it’s not really black, it’s more of a pale green to blue root. Striking leaves and contains high concentrations of curcuminoids (the active ingredient in turmeric that is said helps with inflammation)

I’ve added the Black tumeric, orange and red as well, and also ginger to the longest raised garden bed in the duck area. Now that the beds have had their green manure crop they are ready to plant it. 6 months after we built them they are ready to start planting our foods.

I feel so lucky to have spotted this blue tongue lizard.
And before our cat spotted it too.

The cat is now fully restricted to indoors, as we can see this one has chosen our backyard as its home for now (we must have heaps of slugs and snails to keep it happy) and to keep this blue tongue happy and healthy, we will be keeping a few extra lettuces and strawberries unpicked to encourage slugs and snail activity.

Hopefully we see it around a little more.

This interesting creature, looks like some sort of dragon fly?

Super excited as the Jaboticaba is flowering, hopefully this means fruit will be on their way.

I was able to taste one fruit from this tree a few months ago (it just produced one single fruit) and it was delicious

Now with a fair few flowers along the branches, I’m hoping to have enough fruit to try my hand at a jam or syrup.

A break from the garden this afternoon as I was at Bay FM promoting the Redlands edible garden trail, an event running next year 28-29 August.
I am one of this trails garden hosts (and organisers) and helping to support the other local gardeners in the Redlands Qld.

Check out the awesome fungus that have been popping up around the garden after all that rain 🥰

I love diverse fungi in the garden, it’s shows me I have good soil and that means tastier more nutritious food for the family!

It was so great speaking at Redlands Organic Growers Inc last night. We covered sufficiency and how to create and track nutrient density in our food crop.

If you haven’t started growing food, now is a perfect time to start.

Easy crops are radishes, lettuce (loose leaf varieties like salad bowl are great for Brisbane) and cherry tomatoes. Best thing is you can interplant them in your garden around other plants. And they grow well in pots so are renter and sunny balcony friendly.

Other great crops to grow is sweet potato, taro, arrowroot and yams. These are fantastic calorie dense crops that do well in Brisbane.
Also peanuts, grow well in pots and grow pretty well most of the year. And are great for cooking oil!
