Is it just me, or does Celosia look like Mother Nature’s lava lamp?

Those wild, colourful, velvety blooms instantly take me back to the lava lamps of the ’70s and their big comeback in the ’90s!

Celosia is one of my favourite annuals for taking the garden from summer right into fall. It loves the heat, brings incredible colour and texture, and those funky blooms are perfect for adding a touch-and-feel element to a sensory garden. They also make fantastic cut flowers and can even be dried to enjoy long after the gardening season ends.

🌋 FUN FACT: The original lava lamp was launched in 1963 in Britain as the “Astro Lamp.” Its inventor, Edward Craven Walker, got the inspiration after seeing an unusual liquid-filled egg timer bubbling away in a pub! (History⁠)

BTS at Bradford Greenhouses!

We’re already looking ahead to 2027, testing plants to find the ones that don’t just look great in the greenhouse but actually perform in your garden.

One that really caught my eye? Akila® Sunshine Yellow Osteospermum. 💛

Why? Flower power! Even through the hot dog days of summer, when many osteos start to slow down, this beauty was still loaded with bright, sunny blooms. ☀️🌼

That’s what plant testing is all about, finding the plants that can take the heat and keep on blooming!

Ever wonder how greenhouse growers get fall mums blooming before autumn even arrives?

Here’s one of the industry’s coolest tricks: blackout growing.

Some plants, like fall garden mums, poinsettias, and Christmas cactus (Zygocactus), are daylight sensitive. They don’t flower based on age—they flower based on the length of the day.

To get those colourful blooms ready for garden centres earlier, growers cover the crop with special blackout curtains each day, limiting the amount of light the plants receive.

The plants think the days are getting shorter… just like fall is arriving. The result? Earlier flowers, beautiful colour, and perfectly timed plants for the season.

It’s not magic—it’s understanding how plants naturally respond to light. ☀️

🌿 Want basil that keeps producing all summer long? Here’s the trick…

As soon as you see those flower buds forming, give your basil a trim.

When basil starts to flower, it shifts its energy into producing seed instead of those fresh, flavour-packed leaves we love. By pinching or trimming off the flower stems, you’re telling the plant to get back to growing.

The result? More tender leaves, bushier plants, and continuous fresh harvests right through the season.

It’s one of the easiest jobs in the garden, and it makes a huge difference.

A little trim today means a lot more pesto, pasta, and caprese salads tomorrow. 🌱

I’ll admit it... I’ve fallen back in love with roses. 🌹

Walking through beautiful gardens recently reminded me why roses have inspired gardeners for centuries. Their fragrance, beauty, and history are simply unforgettable.

For years, roses got a bad rap for being fussy, disease-prone, and insect magnets. But today’s roses are a different story. If you choose the right varieties for your climate, plant them in the right spot, and give them a little care, they can be some of the easiest and most rewarding shrubs in your garden.

So I’m diving headfirst into the world of roses, and it all starts with a visit to a local rose grower. I’ll be sharing what I’m learning, highlighting great varieties for different regions, and hopefully giving you the confidence to grow them too.
