Nature doesn’t do straight lines, so why should we? 🌵✨

At MAKZL, we believe in architecture that breathes with the land. From the sweeping curves of the "Northern Welcoming Area" to the geometric precision of "Zenith Origins," we’re redefining the desert landscape through Xeriscape principles and passive design solutions.

This isn't just landscaping; it’s a high-energy intervention where resilience meets geometry. We’re sculpting the desert’s true character into a constructible masterpiece. 🌪️🏛️

🌿 The Art of Softscape Buffering

Softscape isn’t just about beauty — it creates functional transitions that enhance human experience + the environment.

🌳 Layered Planting =
✔ Natural buffers + privacy
✔ Softened architecture
✔ Habitat + cooling

🌱 Plant hierarchy:
Canopy 🌳 | Understory 🌿 | Shrubs 🌱 | Ground layer 🌾

✅ Plan for mature size + roots
✅ Preserve key views
✅ Match microclimates

🔲 UNIVERSAL URBAN SHADES — A New Typology of Urban Comfort

Introducing a next-generation modular shade structure designed for today’s dynamic cities.
It’s not just a shelter, it’s an immersive, climate-responsive pavilion, merging functionality with timeless design.

☁️ Provides adaptive shade & lighting
🚲 Supports urban mobility (bike-friendly)
♻️ Crafted with recycled materials
🌆 Acts as a social node and urban landmark

We believe public infrastructure can be both sculptural and essential.

At MAKZL, we believe the future of arid landscapes isn't about fighting the environment, it’s about celebrating it. By integrating the Xeriscape method with precise organic geometry, we’ve created a sustainable sanctuary that thrives in the heart of the desert.

Architecture should feel like a natural extension of the earth. This study at NEOM reimagines how water-engineered design can transform our coastlines into resilient, living landmarks.

What do you think is the most important element of desert architecture: Sustainability or Symmetry? Let us know below!

Can you grow a landscape at 50°C? ☀️🌵
In Episode 2 of INSIDE MAKZL, we’re breaking down the Xeriscape Method. Most landscapes fail in extreme environments because they start with aesthetics. At NEOM, we started with identity and data.
By mapping wind corridors, heat exposure, and natural drainage, we developed a design language where the hardscape mimics tectonic plates and the softscape only lives where the desert allows. The result?
- Reduced irrigation demand
- Lower maintenance
- 100% Native & adaptive species
In the desert, sustainability isn’t a “feature”, it’s the foundation.
What’s the biggest challenge you face when designing for extreme climates? Let’s talk in the comments. 💬
